I got to make another one of these, and truly they are a joy to make.

It’s not that they’re ‘easy’, (maths, so much maths involved) but there’s something about not having to consider stones that makes it feel refreshing to what I normally do.

And there’s a sense of freedom in fully engraving the Florentine finish, it doesn’t have to be perfectly perfect. It’s akin to shading or crosshatching in a sketch. The multiple passes with the graver, hundreds of passes across the surface that one by one create the density of the effect.

Like velvet. Soft to the touch.
Matte, but sparkly at the same time.

This beautiful beast was made from unworn 22ct gold, alloyed to 18ct.

Made to maximise the dimensions with as little metal loss as possible (that’s where the maths comes in!)

Sentimental to a tee, with a custom cut Australian blue sapphire (by the legendary Scott and Kendall Langford) and Australian Argyle champagne diamonds, hand fabricated in 14ct yellow gold.

Newly arrived at e.g.etal Jewellery Melbourne these precious earrings and necklace are a continuation of the ‘Ornamenting’ series.

Minimalist, handmade bar links suspending precious gem trinkets. A delicate balancing of shape and colour.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The earrings feature a pair of Australian black spinels, expertly cut in a mismatched pair of freeform star cuts. Elegant and dramatic, with lots of movement that catch the light and shadow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The necklace features a deep red wine Australian garnet, in a truly unique medieval gothic style cut, contrasted with a pearlescent pear shaped moonstone.

All hand fabricated in 18ct yellow gold.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some of these stones have been released from my closely guarded collection. The spinels were cut for me by the wonderful Jarrett Sapphires, Jewellery & Fossicking (did you know that black spinel regularly turns up in the fossicking mix with the sapphires?!) and the garnet was an experimental cut given to me by the late and great cutter Paul Fenselau. I really do hoard stones that speak to me, and when they’re ready to come out into the world, it’s like they just scream out at me.

That’s where the Ornamenting series is going. A slow, intentional release of the hoard of over 20 years of collecting.

On the last day of June, it’s only fitting to post another pearl piece. A recent custom for a treasured client to gift to her man. A manly pearl necklace, if you will.

Choker length, but with 3 closure point options for slight adjustments depending on the shirt.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Featuring a simply beautiful (in my favourite pearl tone of all) Tahitian pearl, and a sneaky peridot cabochon towards the back for that little extra somethin-somethin.

Strung on oxidised sterling silver, which will lustre beautifully the more it gets worn, exposing some bright edges but always retaining that dark undertone.

A gently fitting curved band, grain set with pink, moss-grey and green sapphires, meticulously hand selected to complement her parti sapphire and salt and pepper diamond engagement ring.

Hand fabricated, as always, in family heirloom 18ct yellow gold. The same gold that her engagement ring was made in.

A most marvellous new version of the Generosity Ring is headed to . Abundant and overflowing in design, refined and restrained in colour balance.

I have an obsession for balancing colors and tones. I spend a loooottttt of time meticulously selecting tones so that they contrast and complement just right. For example, the green sapphire in this ring needed to be a fresh apple colour. Not teal, not olive, not bottle. Apple.

The simplicity of a fabulously unique sapphire, set in platinum.

This sapphire was actually in my ‘keep’ pile for many years, before I decided that it needed to be free.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It has gone to the most wonderfully creative soul, and a thalassophile (someone who feels a deep and magnetic attraction to the sea or ocean) I’m very pleased that it found the perfect person to be with.

Set at a short, choker length, you’ll notice the almost horizontal angle of the rings attached to the chain. So that when it’s resting high on the neck, the pendant sits on a streamlined angle to the chain.

Every element in a customised piece is considered for the intention of how it will be worn, this is what makes them so special.

I didn’t make this bracelet, but I did have the opportunity to replace the clasp. The bracelet is almost 40 years old and worn every single day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In recent years, the most worn out connections and bezels have been replaced. But the original maker has retired, and the original clasp which had held up SO extremely well for almost 4 decades (a testament to the durability of hand fabrication, a cast/pre-fab type of clasp could never!!) was in dire need of replacing, it was beyond repair.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The thing with this type of repair/restoration work, is you have to commit to being married to the piece once you take it on. You didn’t make it, but you have had the last major hand in it, so you become one of the custodians of the legacy of the heirloom. It’s not a job to take lightly. It’s a responsibility ... to the piece, to the owners, and to the original maker.

For this type of bracelet, IMHO, only a fully customised, hand made clasp would suffice. The owner preferred to keep the original style of the clasp as she was used to it and trusted herself with managing it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The only functional change I made was to add a separate tongue tab. The original clasp had one of the diamond settings as the tongue tab, which is so clever, but for any future repair work it makes things a little more complex. This way the tongue can be replaced if needed in the future, hopefully without needing to reconstruct the whole clasp.

Being a jeweller who has a serious compulsion to only hand fabricating has its struggles, but it’s moments like these that make it all worth while.
