They call it the beautiful game, but she can be a cruel mistress.
She shows no loyalty and can be completely unforgiving.
Agony and ecstasy all depend on which side the coin lands on.
Coming into today's clash with heavyweight Broadmeadow Magic, the Jaffas had won four of their previous five matches and carried plenty of confidence into Magic Park.
Today, they more than held their own and on the balance of play, deserved at least a point for their efforts away from home.
However, as we know in football, you don't always get what you deserve.
After battling back to level the scores in the second minute of stoppage time, the Jaffas looked set to earn a hard-fought point before suffering heartbreak with virtually the final kick of the match.
Magic's Riley Smith had given the home side a 20th-minute lead, and despite creating chances throughout the afternoon, the visitors were unable to find a breakthrough until added time.
When Jimmy Oates' volley crashed against the upright, Joe Langlois reacted quickest, rising to head home the rebound and make it 1-1.
It was no more than the industrious midfielder deserved after a dominant performance in the centre of the park.
However, with the allotted five minutes of stoppage time well and truly elapsed, Magic launched one final attack from a free kick deep inside their own half.
A delivery into the area was initially cleared by the Jaffas defence, but only as far as the edge of the box.
Keanu Moore's attempted pass then took a deflection off a defender and fell kindly for Jarred Baker, who steadied himself before rifling a shot into the top-left corner beyond the outstretched dive of Ben Kennedy.
It was a cruel ending for a Lambton side that matched one of the competition's benchmark teams for long periods and produced one of its most complete performances of the season.
For Magic, the win was their fourth in a row and saw them go five points clear at the top of the table.
On a ladder where everything is tight, five points is a handy break.

Adamstown snapped a five-week winless run in dramatic fashion, storming home from two goals down to defeat Olympic 4-2 at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Saturday night.
After a cagey opening from both sides, Olympic struck twice in the space of five minutes through Maddy Howard.
The forward found the back of the net in the 19th and 24th minutes to hand the visitors a commanding 2-0 advantage, a lead they carried into the half-time break.
The match turned on its head midway through the second half when Georgia Cook produced a moment of magic to spark the Adamstown comeback.
Pinned against the right touchline, Cook took a touch inside onto her favoured left foot and appeared to be aiming for sister Mia at the back post.
Instead, the ball sailed over Olympic goalkeeper Isabella Whitton and nestled into the far corner in the 62nd minute.
The goal breathed life into the Buds, and just four minutes later, Mary Ntsweng restored parity, finishing off a sustained period of pressure as the home side seized control of the contest.
With momentum firmly in their favour, Adamstown continued to push forward, while Olympic desperately tried to weather the storm.
The breakthrough came in the 81st minute when Ntsweng grabbed her second of the evening, her strike from the edge of the penalty area taking a deflection that left Whitton stranded.
Substitute Ashleigh Vetter put the result beyond doubt late in the match, reacting quickest during a goalmouth scramble to poke home Adamstown’s fourth and complete a remarkable second-half turnaround.

Adamstown secured consecutive victories for the first time this season, defeating a 10-man Newcastle Olympic 2-0 at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Saturday night.
The Buds took control early, opening the scoring in the 15th minute when Nicolás Gismero arrived at the back post to convert a superb delivery from Taj Buck.
Olympic’s task became significantly tougher in the 29th minute when Jared Muller was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the space of 90 seconds.
His first caution followed an off-the-ball altercation with Tommy Smart, before a late challenge on Dane Lawther earned him a second booking and an early trip to the sheds.
Adamstown capitalised on their numerical advantage just six minutes later.
After George Stephens punched clear a dangerous Ryan Rooke corner, the ball fell kindly to Kayden Soper, who unleashed a thunderous half-volley from the top of the box to double the lead.
It was another difficult evening for Olympic, whose luckless 2026 campaign continued with a third straight defeat.
The result leaves them hovering just two points above the relegation zone heading into a crucial clash with Kahibah next weekend.
Adamstown, meanwhile, will look to make it three wins on the trot when they take on competition leaders Broadmeadow Magic in what should be an entertaining encounter.

In the only fixture to beat the weather today, claimed a gritty 1-0 upset win over the at Hunter City Group Stadium.
Played in front of a strong Sponsors Day crowd, the second chapter of the 2026 El Clasicoal Derby was a scrappy, hard-fought affair from the opening whistle, with rain and heavy conditions making fluent football difficult.
Both sides created half-chances throughout the first half, but the best early opportunity fell to Maitland in the 30th minute.
Jimmy Thompson won possession inside his attacking half before threading a perfectly weighted pass through to Braedyn Crowley.
Crowley drew defenders and squared the ball to Daniel McFarlane, but the Magpies forward blazed his effort over the bar.
As the rain eased and the sun broke through, Weston almost produced a moment of magic in the 37th minute when Connor Evans attempted an audacious 25-metre chip that sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Moments later, Maitland found the breakthrough.
Thompson capped off a superb first-half performance with a left-footed strike that crashed off the inside of the right upright before bouncing across goal and nestling inside the left post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The second half belonged largely to Weston, who controlled possession and territory for long periods, but once again the Bears struggled to turn dominance into goals on home soil.
It’s now just two wins from seven home matches this season for Weston, who have also suffered four defeats and one draw at Hunter City Group Stadium.
To Maitland’s credit, the Magpies defended resolutely under sustained pressure and ultimately held firm to secure a valuable three points in enemy territory.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
Sport can be cruel sometimes.
Saturday night was a rollercoaster, and this season was like a theme park where Jets fans got to run around and ride on all the rides for free.
There were sugar highs at every turn.
A few bumpy sideshows, but overall, just a joy to be a part of.
And while the ending wasn’t the one we dreamed of, this group gave the city something real to believe in again.
To see McDonald Jones heaving with football fans again was a sight to behold.
The Eli Adams equaliser moment will stay with me for a lifetime, just as the Riley McGree Scorpion kick has.
The euphoria was simply out of this world.
The ending hurt.
Actually, it sucked!
It hurt the players, the fans, and the town.
But I walked away feeling proud and content, knowing the Jets were finally on the right flight path.
The semi-final loss wasn't the end.
It was just the beginning.

Up the Jetties.
