Two round Australian parti sapphires, each set differently.

Melanie Katsalidis frames hers with six staggered baguette diamonds on a fine knife edge band, a quiet nod to Art Deco. Julia Storey carves subtle detail beneath the setting and lets pear cut diamonds taper down the band, the stone holding the deep blues and greens of cool ocean water.

Both are made in 18ct yellow gold, to be worn every day, for years to come.

This is the pleasure of a gallery of thirty artists: seeing the same stone through different eyes, side by side, and finding the one you’ll call yours.

Three stones, one family.

Alesha came to us with a diamond she had inherited. She wanted to wear it alongside two new stones, a zircon and a green amethyst, so that each could represent herself, her husband and their son.

The necklace was drawn around the stones: a circle, a triangle and a pear, each held in its own claw setting, reading together as one.

An orchid dreams…

For Radiant Pavilion 2026, Michaela Pegum takes over our Russell Place windows with a new body of work that starts from a chain of dreams: an orchid dreaming she is a woman, a woman becoming the ocean, a statue of a rare bird, a cloud of perfume.

“I make jewellery to become a part of someone, or ignite a transformation in them.”
Each pendant is formed in re-constructed glass, quartz and mica. All three are made of silica, the same mineral found in plant cells, animal bone and radiolaria. Michaela calls this “a genuine material continuum.”

Gem School is in session: TOURMALINE

For centuries, tourmaline went by other names. Traders and jewellers sold it as ruby, emerald and sapphire, and it still turns up in disguise: the peach stone in Suzi Zutic’s Ophir ring was first sold to her as a sapphire.

Gem School: Tourmaline, October’s birthstone.

Its name began as a word for a handful of mixed stones. “Turmali” was what Sri Lankan traders called the colourful gems they sifted from river gravels, and fittingly, alongside opal, tourmaline is found in more colours than any other gem.

There is one gemstone no camera ever quite captures. Happy birthday to the October babies, your birthstone is opal.

Mine started with a high-school trip to Coober Pedy, then a dinner party in 2014 with my friends Georgie and Al from Alpha60 that turned into a collaboration. Wanting opal cut into my own shapes meant going to the source: meeting the miners, buying rough direct.
