Ernst completed his apprenticeships in silversmithing and goldsmithing in Switzerland, worked professionally for 2 years before arriving in Australia in 1973. In 1974 Ernst started his own workshop, showroom and private school in Sydney. Over 1500 students have attended his school learning the techniques of gold and silversmithing in an authentic workshop. A strong alliance was formed in 1989 when Sharon and Ernst Pfenninger's business partnership began. From 2003 until today Ernst's work is on permanent display at their boutique gallery style shop Studio 303 in Leichhardt (Sydney). Ernst handcrafts detailed contemporary to classic items of jewellery, silverware, hollow-ware to small sculptures and ceremonial items for his private clientele, corporate customers, educational institutions, charities, government bodies and city councils. He is commissioned to make unique items to multiple quantities. Some notable commissions are ceremonial Keys to the City for 13 Councils, mayoral chain, five sterling silver maces for the Federal Court of Australia, Wine awards and much more. Ernst's work is renowned both in Australia and internationally where he was involved in several exhibitions in Japan and Korea.
