White gold does not occur naturally. It begins as yellow gold, which is mixed with other metals to create a lighter coloured alloy. That alloy is then finished with a very fine layer of rhodium plating, giving white gold the bright, crisp finish most people recognise.

However, rhodium is only a surface finish and will gradually wear over time. As it does, the natural colour of the white gold alloy underneath begins to show through. If that alloy has a warmer or more yellow tone, the difference can become quite noticeable, which is why what sits underneath the rhodium matters.

At Matthews Jewellers, we use palladium in our 18k white gold alloy instead. Palladium is a naturally white precious metal from the platinum family, giving the gold a much whiter base before rhodium is even applied. The result is a softer, whiter tone underneath the plating, so as the rhodium gradually wears, the change in colour is far less noticeable. Using palladium also allows us to avoid nickel in our white gold alloy. Nickel is a lower-cost alloying metal used in some white gold and can cause skin sensitivity or irritation for some people.

If you are looking for a white metal with even less maintenance, we also recommend considering platinum. Platinum is naturally white, so it does not require rhodium plating to maintain its colour. It has a slightly greyer tone than freshly plated white gold, although on the hand the difference is very subtle.

Platinum was traditionally considered the more premium option and often came with a much higher price tag. With gold prices rising significantly over the past few years, that gap has narrowed considerably, making platinum a very attractive option for anyone wanting a naturally white, low-maintenance metal.
