Patricia and I bought our first Murray Grey cattle and joined the Murray Grey Society early in 1976, fifty years ago. We ran cattle on multiple properties on the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland, at South Nanango and Kumbia in the South Burnett and most recently at Mount Kilcoy in the Somerset.
Time, however, waits for no man - and so we have reluctantly put our remaining cattle on the market. I'm very pleased that they have all been purchased by the Crawford family from Kumbia, and will continue breeding as one herd. We are confident in the quality we built into fifty years of breeding, and wish the Crawfords all the best with the cattle.
I'd like to thank all those who have followed us in our work with the cattle, and in the inevitable highs and lows that come with cattle breeding. Over the coming months, the property at Mount Kilcoy will come on the market, and I will be dismounting this Facebook group. Thanks to all, and good wishes to everyone involved with this wonderful breed.

Pacan Magnolia (by Eylwarra Sands Falcon F33) is one of our mature cows - a big framed placid natured matron who calved a week ago with this soft grey bull calf sired by Pacan Jerusalem. Jerusalem was Junior Champion at two South Burnett shows in 2014, and is no longer with us, but this little fellow looks like he might follow in his sire's footsteps. He'll be available for sale around this time next year.

I checked Pacan Quarrian yesterday, and on the basis of fifty years of experience, decided she had a few days to go before calving. Obviously, Quarrian (and the calf) had other ideas!
She has a very strong and vigorous heifer calf sired by Pacan Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the calf at foot in the cover photo for this page.
Quarrian is a big-framed long cow by Eylwarra Sands Falcon F33 from a female line we have had for well over twenty years.

With some discussion on other Murray Grey pages regarding twins, it seemed a good time to run this photo of our twin heifer calves (about to be weaned) with their dam (mother). The cow weighed 866 kg about a month before the calves were born, and the calves were only slightly smaller than you might expect a single birth calf to be.
The cow was a twin herself; her mother had 3 sets of twins. These two heifer calves were sired by Pacan Somerset, now working for Brendan Crawford at Kumbia, and carry a double cross of Eylwarra Sands Falcon F33.

At only six days old, this Murray Grey bull calf already looks the goods. Sired by Pacan Somerset out of Pacan Magnolia, he's a prospect for the show ring next year. There is some swelling in the navel area; he's been treated with a long-acting antibiotic and is being observed daily.

Our two young Murray Grey bulls Pacan Tumoulin and Pacan Tingoora made their last show appearance for us at Pine Rivers show last weekend. As usual, they were prepared and paraded by students of the Kilcoy High School show team, who once again did an excellent job of both. Tumoulin was Junior and Grand Champion British bull, to add these ribbons to the tally over the four shows.
The bulls will appear in the Handlers classes only at the Schools Hoof and Hook event in Kilcoy in September, and then start their working lives on the Crawford family’s properties at Kumbia.

Many thanks to Chelsea and the rest of the Kilcoy High Show Team for taking care of our two young bulls at the Maleny Show. It was pleasing for us to have Pacan Tingoora chosen as the Junior and Grand Champion British Breed bull.

These two young bulls (Tingoora is black, Tumoulin is the grey) are now just a week short of eight months old. They will have to be weaned in the next month, in preparation for a show career before sire duties. They were weighed on Wednesday at 338 and 351 kg; they both have the wonderful temperament for which the Murray Grey breed is famous. (Updated photos to follow - these photos were taken in August when they were eight weeks old.)

Tumoulin is the site of a former small town on the Atherton Tablelands, about 5km from Ravenshoe - had a Post Office, Railway Station, small shop, one-teacher school. Tumoulin is also the name of this bull calf, sired by Pacan Lyndhurst out of Pacan Persephone. He has a wonderfully calm temperament, and at exactly four months old weighs 206kg. I'm impressed with him at this stage, and looking forward to seeing how he develops.
