I am so excited to be teaching this class. I am really looking forward to being able to spend two days really focussing on the techniques that I have spent many years practising and developing.

I have had a really great bank holiday? I actually finished all my urgent to do list on Sunday so took all of yesterday off! We got up early and went to our local car boot sale where I bought these two gorgeous books. They are amazing and I am half way through the Lawrence Durrell one already. I love the paintings by Paul Nash and they are even better because I have visited many of the places featured. In the afternoon I sat and played with my paints trying to depict the foxgloves in our woods. As always I am thinking of how to make this work for enamelled jewellery. There is a quote in the book adapted from a Sufi mystic, about forgetting the physical form and painting the perfume. I really like that because too often I have focussed on tiny detail, which is easy for me to do with cloisonné. More and more now I am trying to depict a more abstracted image with colour, engraving and only a few wires. Just the latest step on my life’s journey with enamel. If nothing else it gives me an outlet for all the art materials I have collected over the years! The paintings are in gouache with sepia ink in a dip pen on tiny khadi pieces of paper. They aren’t finished and probably just the first as I explore this subject further. The foxgloves are glorious and the best we have had in the woods. Have a wonderful day. I am seeing friends later for a cream tea and a catch up. What a treat.

I bought some new pearls for this bluebell necklace. What do you think? I’m planning to wear it for a special event soon and I couldn’t resist them when I saw them. The necklace is a mix of gold and silver cloisonné enamel on silver with an Iolite set in 18ct gold. I made it a while ago in response to the bluebells in the woods where I walk the dog everyday. It was part of a small series of pieces I made on this theme.

I’m not sure how we have made it to almost half way through May! Life seems to be hurtling past at an alarming rate and I don’t seem to have time to take a breathe. On my bench today are these olive leave pieces. They will eventually be a pendant, pair of earrings and a pair of cufflinks. The oval ones will lose the loop! Last night I gave an online talk and feel totally exhausted today. You wouldn’t think talking was so tiring. Today I need to prep pieces for demonstrating tomorrow FORGE as part of a London Craft week, and then on Thursday at Batemans National Trust as part of a pop up I am in. Full details of both on my website and link in my bio. It would be great to see you at one of them. Make sure you say hello if you do come. You will need to register for the Forge event so make sure you follow the link on my website to do so.

Have you heard the saying that the devil makes work for idle hands? I think it might be true. Today is the first time I have taken a day off for about three weeks. Honestly it’s been manic with shows, teaching, setting up and exhibition and planning future classes not to mention finishing (sort of) my new website! Whilst I was sitting down to practice the ancient art of relaxation, (I’m really not very good at that), I realised that I need new jewellery for a very special event I am going to soon and absolutely nothing I have made already will do! I’m thinking blue hydrangeas with freshwater pearls. Just need to make a necklace and earrings together with all the orders I have to do as well. It’s going to be a busy few weeks! Fingers crossed it goes well! Wish me luck. I might need it.
