Prior to the later 2010s, most amethysts on the market originated from Brazil. However in 2017 a new deposit of amethyst was found in Newfoundland, Canada! Called the La Manche deposit, it includes both saturated medium to medium-dark purple gems and light purple gems commonly marketed as “rose de France.” Many can be faceted into beautiful gemstones as large as 8–11 carats.

The most desirable amethysts are typically either hosted inside geodes within basalt (volcanic rock) or in epigenetic hydrothermal veins, as is the case with the La Manche deposit.

Time will tell how this exciting new find evolves the amethyst market!
