Part one of building our DIY roof rack, with a tilting solar panel. It’s a monster 475watt panel on a tiny Japanese kei van (Daihatsu Hijet 1985 4x4). We bought her in a shed in Sydney, unregistered and not running… we got her cleaned up, got her going and have turned her into a tiny but mighty camper. It’s surreal to be doing the final big steps before we take her out into the wild.

We wanted bigger all terrain tyres for our micro 4x4 van… then we realised the sliding door wouldn’t open. Two gate hinges later and the door slides again.

No one makes a lift kit for our 1985 diahatsu hijet 4x4 van… so we made one ourselves, and got a decent 30mm lift that we’re super happy with.

This week:
✓ Gas stove installed
✓ Pull-out kitchen drawer built
✓ Random old wardrobe piece given a second life

And somehow… it all fits.

8 weeks.
45 seconds.
We’ve stripped it out, insulated it, wired it, built cupboards, fitted a roof vent, installed lights, added a fridge, and somehow squeezed a bed, couch and kitchen into 2.1m².

Big Red is still far from finished, but the difference between day one and today is pretty wild.

The world’s smallest 4x4 camper is slowly coming together. 🚐

Getting some actual light inside Big Red 💡

This one felt like a big win.

We installed the LED strip lighting under the overhead cupboard, wired up the switch, connected everything to the power system and finally got to see it all working.

It’s amazing how much more like a camper it feels when you can flick a switch and the lights come on.

Still plenty left to do, but we’re slowly getting there.
