Sometimes an engagement starts with a shared picture...

Sometimes it's a sketch of an idea, a particular shaped diamond, or simply, "I know what she likes, but I'm not sure how to put it all together"

That's where the design journey begins.

We talk. I listen. We explore the little details that make it unique for the person receiving it from them. From there, an idea starts to take shape, the right gem is sourced, the design is refined, and slowly we create something that couldn't belong to anyone else.

Mined or Lab-Grown? Which diamond is right for you?

It's one of the questions I'm asked most often.

The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong answer.

Both are real diamonds. Both are beautiful. Both have their place.

The best choice comes down to what's important to you.

Some clients love the natural history of a mined diamond, formed over billions of years beneath the earth.

Others prefer a lab-grown diamond because it allows them to choose a larger stone or a different budget without compromising on quality and beauty.

My role isn't to persuade you one way or the other.

It's to explain the differences, answer your questions honestly, and help you choose the diamond that feels right for your story.

You don't need to have all the answers before we meet.

"I'd like to create an engagement ring, but I don't know where to start."

It still excites me every time.

There's something incredibly special about being invited into that part of someone's story.

Before we ever talk about diamonds or designs, we spend time talking about the person who'll be wearing it.

What makes them smile.
How they dress.
What they do for a career.
The jewellery they already love.
The little details that make them who they are.

Sometimes they've "accidentally" left a trail of inspiration in saved photos or messages. Sometimes all their partner knows is how they want the ring to feel.

That's enough to begin.

Those conversations are some of my favourites because, for a little while, I'm helping keep a beautiful secret.

Then comes the design, the anticipation, the finished ring... and finally, the proposal.

I've been lucky enough to share that journey with several couples already this year, and every single one has been different.

It's a reminder that while engagement rings may all represent the same promise, no two stories are ever the same.

And that's exactly how I believe they should be designed.

What does a jewellery designer actually do?

Most people think my job is drawing beautiful jewellery.

But that's actually one of the last steps.

The real work begins with listening.

Listening to your story, understanding what matters, discovering how you'll wear the piece, exploring the jewellery you already own, sourcing gemstones that feel right, and asking questions you may not have even thought about.

Sometimes that means redesigning family heirlooms.

Sometimes it's creating an engagement ring that's unlike anything you've seen in a jewellery store.

Sometimes it's helping someone discover what they really want after feeling overwhelmed by endless choices.

Every design is shaped through conversation, not chosen from a display cabinet.

Because the most meaningful jewellery isn't found.

It's created.

What makes a ruby so special isn't just its colour. It's the stories it collects over time.

For centuries, rubies have symbolised love, courage and protection. Perhaps that's why they've become one of the gemstones most often passed from one generation to the next.

A ruby might begin as a milestone gift, an anniversary piece or a family heirloom. Over time, it becomes much more than a gemstone.

It becomes part of a family's story.

Every scratch, every celebration and every hand it passes through adds another chapter.

That's what I love about designing jewellery with coloured gemstones. You're not simply creating something beautiful for today.

You're creating something that may one day be worn by someone who knows the story behind it because you chose to begin it.

The most treasured heirlooms aren't valuable because of the gemstones they hold.

They're valuable because of the lives they've been part of.

One of the biggest misconceptions about inherited jewellery is that redesigning it means losing its story.

In my experience, it's quite the opposite.

Many people have jewellery tucked away in a drawer because they can't imagine parting with it, but they also know they'll never wear it as it is.

The sentimental value isn't in the style of the ring, the setting or the clasp.

It's in the person it came from.

That's why an heirloom redesign isn't about starting again. It's about deciding what matters most.

Perhaps it's using the original diamonds or gemstones. Perhaps it's melting and reusing the gold. Sometimes it's preserving a special engraving or incorporating part of the original design. And sometimes, it's simply carrying the memory forward into a piece you'll actually wear.

Every redesign is different because every story is different.

The goal isn't to erase the past.

It's to honour it in a way that feels right for your life today.
