PSA: Gentlemen it’s that time again, Things to know about wearing rings
1. Ring indentation – For first time ring wearers when you begin wearing a new ring it can often feel a little tight but after a couple of months of consistent wear the skin beneath the ring starts to form an indentation that becomes more comfortable over time.

2. Hot & Cold – temperature plays a big part in our finger sizes, for some more than others (depending on your finger type). This means on hot days comfortable rings can feel tight, and swimming can make your jewellery feel loose from the cool

3. Stress / Rushing – particularly for men when they first try on rings there is a moment

When a terrifying thought pops into their head “will I be able to get this off”
& heart rate increases, in that moment of panic blood flow increases making your hands swell up. The same thing occurs if you must pull and pull to remove a ring. The best thing to do is breath, push the ring up from underneath and wiggle side to side. Cold water and soap are another way to remove a tight ring.

4. Everyday Damage – Gent’s and ladies this one is for everyone to ensure the longevity of your rings best practice is to remove them before doing laborious tasks such as going to the gym as the equipment can cause damage along with, cycling, wearing them in and around the workplace, car maintenance and even water activities.

Recently I had the opportunity to remake a gentlemen’s wedding ring that he had unfortunately lost while dividing up hay for their pets and the ring went flying into the wind. Thankfully he had his ring covered by jewellery insurance, so we were able to re-create it without the client having to pay for a completely new piece.
His ring is handmade in solid platinum with a freeform “Split Wave” that moves through the band, one side is highly polished and contrasts against the fine, brushed, matt finish of the other side. 1 white baguette cut Diamond is channel set into the “Split Wave”.

Happy Birthday!
This client came to the studio wanting to create piece to celebrate her 30th birthday, and working in the design industry herself, she had a distinct vision for her piece.
She also brought in a ring passed down through her family that would be remodelled into something new but still reusing the heirloom Diamonds
A key aspect of this design was to have a different perspective of the ring as it moves around her finger. She sketched up a few of her ideas and I saw in each of these a consistency. Straight lines with soft rounded corners creating a pillow-y effect.
This was the style we decided on, and alternated large and paired smaller stones together. The larger Diamonds are rub over set into square cushion shapes while the smaller stones are channel set between the gold sections.

We later received these very kind words from the client which she was happy for us to share.

“I just wanted to thank you again for my beautiful ring. I love it so much. It fits perfectly and moves and changes as I hoped it would.

Thank you for realizing my vision. I am so happy with the experience.”

Repair & Restoration.
This handmade 18ct white gold ring was brought to me by a long-term client, the Sapphire had some scratches and chips along the sides so to protect it from any further damage I suggested we add a full bezel setting around the edge of the stone. This also gave me the opportunity to revitalise the ring with a polish and rhodium plate restoring it to its former glory.

As we see Gold become ever more expensive due to unpredictability it’s important to remember unworn pieces of jewellery now have more value than ever before. Sentimental jewellery that is great for remodelling, as it transforms historical and emotional meaning into a modern piece by reusing precious metals and gemstones designed for the wearer to enjoy. Not sure what your jewellery is made from or its history ? Lucas is happy to access each piece of jewellery and recommend the best way to reuse or repurpose it.

New month New Birthstone - Peridot

This gem’s colour is unique in that it only comes in varying shades of green ranging from lime and grass greens to darker olive-greens and most of these colours are not often found in other gemstone types

Peridots come next on the Mohs Scale of Hardness after Emeralds and Spinel making them a suitable choice for most jewellery pieces.

Terrestrial Peridots are formed within the Earth mantle rather than in the crust and can only be found once volcanoes or tectonic plates move them up into the Earth’s crust to be discovered. While extraterrestrial Peridot has also been found in crystals inside pallasite meteorites that have been found after falling to Earth.
