This handmade platinum and 18ct yellow gold engagement was made for a couple that came to me wanting to design their own engagement ring, I prompted them for some inspiration and discovered that the design would be focused on form and structure as the client worked in industrial design. Initial thoughts began as a wide cigar style band in gold with an Emerald cut stone. It’s always great to have a starting point and after a few discussions the design evolved into something made for them.
Gemstones weren’t to be the sole focus of this ring but after a few appointments to view of Sapphires ranging in colours, from Sri Lankan Cornflower blue & Australian Blue/ Green to pale pink Padparadscha Sapphires. The individuality of the gemstones led the way till the clients discovered one that resonated with them – a beautiful and unique Australian Sapphire, the distinctive colour banding of this gem creating an illusion that draws the viewer into its sparkly depths.

For the band we took inspiration from a few of my original constructionist pieces that play with angles and shape. They liked the form of my “Curved Wall” design as well as the “Asymmetrical Sapphire Ring”, combining these elements to create a bold yet minimalistic ring that shows off the stone and engages the eye with refined perspectives. The bezel set Sapphire appears to float as it sits against the platinum wall, set with a total 20 round brilliant cut Diamonds that highlight the Sapphire when looking from above, yet also draws the eye as they trickle down the side of the band.
A truly timeless and intriguing design

May is the month of the ‘Emerald’ . This gemstone has a rich history and is well known as a precious gemstone, not only for its rarity (rarer than Diamonds!) but also known from having its very own gem cutting shape named after it; The Emerald Cut.
Developed specifically to ensure the safety of the gemstone, by having it cut in this stepped style it helps hold the integrity of the stone as it has a slightly more brittle makeup which can cause sharp corners to chip.

Cleopatra was known for her love of Emeralds and would use these stones for a variety of purposes from giving them as gifts to using them as statuses of wealth or power. Emeralds were also viewed as having mystical powers in ancient times and were used to bring forth the truth and as an aid in clairvoyance

Like most coloured precious and semi- precious gemstones Emeralds are as unique as you or i with no 2 coloured gemstones being identical – close matches can be made but each gemstone is like a fingerprint, one of a kind!

These handmade 18ct yellow gold Amethyst pendants were made for a client who had brought some pieces of heirloom Amethyst (previously set into pieces jewellery) that had been passed down through the family. The client wanted to get the original stones recut and polished into 3 sugarloaf- shaped amethysts, then set into separate pendants. These beautiful and refined pendants will then be gifted to each of the 3 granddaughters of the family

Each Pendant is in a double bezel setting with most of the setting done in 18ct yellow gold. The 2nd bezel is made of platinum and creates a lovely definition and contrast between the yellow gold and Amethyst.

This handmade ladies dress ring was a piece that I first made back in 2015 but unfortunately it was lost to time. However, the love the client had for the design hadn’t faded since and it was now time to recreate this piece for her. The client has a strong connection to Vasudhara; a goddess of Wealth and Prosperity whose name translates to “Stream of Gems” and is often depicted sitting on a Lotus flower. The client wanted the design to emulate this.
The brilliant round deep purple Amethyst represents this connection and weighs approximately 21.40cts. The 2 rows of orange Sapphires that are bead set along the 18ct rose gold bezel setting symbolise letting go or being open to new ideas. A trilogy of pear-shaped stones is also hung off to the side of the ring. A white Diamond, the clear colour meaning Clarity & Resilience, a Black Diamond representing the energy of Kalika and a red Ruby symbolising; new beginnings, creativity and power

I started by first making the 18ct rose gold ring that would serve the bezel setting for the Amethyst as well as working on the platinum “lotuses” that would become the basket as well as some smaller ones that would fit into circular frames in the band. Each lotus was created by doming a plate of platinum followed by carving out marked sections with a handsaw. Once I had created all the individual lotuses, and I had put the rest of the ring together it was ready to be set. Compared to the original design, I slightly altered the design of the lotuses to give this piece its own unique flare.
Finally after 11 years this stunning and intricate ring was back in the client’s life for her to enjoy.

This handmade platinum, Sapphire and Diamond dress ring was made for a client who had been wanting a custom Sapphire ring designed for a while. She came to the studio with some inspiration for the design. Wanting a freeform ring that had a sense of movement. With that in mind, I curated a selection of gemstones looking for the perfect one. She decided on a fine, Sri Lankan Sapphire in cornflower blue, totalling approximately 2.25cts as well as G colour VS1 clarity Diamond to complete the ensemble. With both the gemstones and design decided, I hand carved the band in wax.

By hand crafting this piece in wax, it creates a model that the client can visualise the form and try it on. Working initially in wax also allows us evolve the design as needed without being restricted by the commitment that can come with working in metal.

From there I work in metal finalising the curves and shapes of the design and fitting settings before a last appointment with the client to check sizing before the ring goes off for setting.

For those lucky to be born in January, Garnet is your birthstone and it has been treasured for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations, particularly Cleopatra, valued Garnet for its deep red beauty and believed it offered protection and enhanced vitality. Garnet comes in a variety of shades, from classic deep red to orange, green, and even purple, making it a versatile gemstone for every style.

Traditionally, Garnet is said to symbolize love, friendship, and strength, making it a meaningful gift for anyone born in January. We have a beautiful selection of garnet gemstones, perfect for a new piece of jewellery. Celebrate the start of the year with the rich, timeless beauty of garnet.

This handmade 18ct yellow gold and platinum engagement ring is a beautiful and refined design that features 5 oval Diamonds in heavy bezel setting that accentuates the shape of the stones and keeps them protected, originally the client was wanting the whole piece in yellow gold but after some discussion we decided the Diamonds would look best in a white metal making platinum the choice to enhance their natural brilliance.
The half-rounded band matches the rounded bezel setting creating a lovely coherence throughout the overall design.

Congratulations to you both

These handmade 18ct yellow gold ladies and gents engagement rings were made for a couple that had heirloom pieces of jewellery given passed down to them.
The first step was to assess the jewellery they were given and decide which were to be used in the remodelling for their ring designs.
For her engagement ring, we removed the stones and started playing with sketches and designs that featured 2 pear shaped Diamonds and 5 round white Diamonds graduating in size, with the 2 pear shapes totalling approx. 0.60cts in H/I colour
The slightly larger stone is fully bezel set about a 45 degree offset to the band while the smaller of the 2 is claw set this shows off much of the Diamond and offers a lovely contrast. The 5 graduating bead set diamonds add extra sparkle to the design and act as a visual separator between the pear-shaped diamonds
His engagement ring is 18ct yellow gold signet ring style with a satin finish on the top and features a polished step down the rest of the tapered band. A sleek design but one that still has a clear aspect of individuality
