Remnants of Making
I made this brooch to acknowledge generations of making and collecting of every day miniature objects, natural, manufactured and hand made. These are the remnants of making across time.
These unexpected items were found in three old jars with metal and Bakelite lids and collected over the last 100 years. A jar of buttons, a jar of shells and a tiny jar of wood screws. They surfaced while sorting through family possessions in the country. Each jar contained extra items, a hook and eye, a tiny threaded nut, a clock key. Useful items too precious to throw away, stored for a future possibility.

The names and uses of these treasured miniatures are slipping from our making vocabulary and grasp. This piece plays with ideas of manufacture and the handmade and echo’s the touch and memory of the lives of others now past.

Day 13 RETURNING Picking up shells from a favourite beach and using them to play with form, colour and shape is something many artists have done. I found many jars of shells picked up from the same beach while packing up my childhood home. These tiny shells were carried 400klm and returned to the very beach they had been collected from decades ago.
