A masterpiece of marine timekeeping, made in Glasgow 1910.

Pictured is the movement from a traditional ship’s chronometer, manufactured in 1910 — an instrument engineered for exceptional accuracy at sea.

At its heart is a fusee and chain system, designed to compensate for the changing force of the mainspring as it unwinds and deliver a more consistent level of power through the gear train. Paired with its distinctive conical balance spring, the movement represents some of the finest precision engineering of the early 20th century.

Before satellite navigation and electronic timekeeping, marine chronometers were essential navigational instruments. Accurate timekeeping allowed mariners to determine longitude with far greater precision, making instruments such as this critical to safe navigation.

More than 115 years later, the craftsmanship remains extraordinary. The scale, construction and mechanical intelligence behind this movement are a reminder of an era when precision was achieved entirely through metal, geometry and meticulous hand-finishing.

What you don’t see can matter most.

Inside every mechanical watch, the mainspring is responsible for storing and delivering the energy that keeps the movement alive.

Over time, old lubricants, contamination and wear can accumulate inside the barrel, as seen here. A dirty mainspring and barrel can affect the smooth delivery of power through the movement, contributing to reduced performance, unstable amplitude and unnecessary wear.

This is precisely why regular servicing and correct preventative maintenance are essential.

Precision beyond standard servicing.

The Valjoux 7750 is one of the most proven automatic chronograph calibres ever produced, but one area that benefits significantly from refinement is the barrel arbor support.

Using a dedicated precision milling fixture, the original barrel arbor bush in the main plate is accurately machined to accept a jewel bearing.

Replacing the standard bush with a jewel reduces friction, improves bearing stability, minimises wear and provides a more precise running surface for the barrel arbor. The result is improved mechanical efficiency, greater long-term stability and reduced wear within the barrel assembly.

This is not a cosmetic modification. It is a functional mechanical upgrade.

The operation requires exact alignment, controlled machining and precise jewel fitting. Once the main plate has been modified, there is no margin for error.

When this Omega came to us for a service, it came with one non negotiable very clear request:

“Touch it up — don’t remove any of the engraving.”

Some might have looked at it and said, “Best leave it alone.”

We looked at it and thought, we can do better.

This TAG Heuer came to us with severe internal corrosion. The movement, rotor, case and surrounding components have all been exposed to moisture, and the damage is clearly visible.

A battery change or watch repair isn’t simply a matter of opening the back, doing the job and closing it again.

A qualified watchmaker checks the condition of the seals, crown, case and case back, makes sure everything is assembled correctly, and where appropriate carries out proper water-resistance testing.

There is a big difference between a professional watchmaking workshop and a shop that says it can “repair watches and cut keys.”

Saving a few dollars on a battery replacement or repair can become a very expensive mistake when moisture gets inside.

If you own a quality timepiece, have it looked after by someone who is actually qualified to work on it.

Apparently TAG Heuer has introduced a new complication… fast-forward mode. Formula🏎️

This one came into the workshop with the hands absolutely flying around the dial — keeping time more like a stopwatch than a wristwatch.

Needless to say, that’s not quite factory specification.

When a quartz movement starts behaving like this, something inside is definitely asking for attention.
