On 10 and 11 October the Broken Hill Field and Game Association hosted its premier sporting clays target shoot for the year, the 41st annual 150 target Silver City Championships. The weather was warm and clear on both days with enough breeze to keep the flies away, very good conditions for shooting clay targets. Organisers were pleased with the attendance of 60 shooters.
The shooters competed for an excellent range of sashes and trophies thanks to the generosity of our sponsors; Barker Electrical Services, Bolton's Precision Engineering, Broken Hill Bank and the Claypan Penguins.
Range marshal Josh Edgecumbe, with plenty of assistance, worked very hard to set a range layout that provided plenty of variety and good fun. The targets were a tad on the easy side of average which made for very good shooting.
The best overall score for the shoot was an excellent total of 135 recorded by Greg “Mocka” McSwain from Sunraysia. Mocka is a regular and popular visitor to Broken Hill, he won his first Silver City Shield way back in 2003, and at this shoot won his third Silver City Shield High Gun sash.
The best Broken Hill shooters were Clay Johnston in AA Grade, Gary Meehan in B Grade and Brian Casey in Seniors Grade who all finished in first place, and Travis Casey in A Grade, Peter H***e in C Grade and Cassie Hibberd in Ladies Grade who all finished in second place.
The Claypan Penguins handicap team championship was won by the “The Mexicans” team comprising Brett McManus, Barry Wentworth, Paul Wentworth and Gary O’Brien, who shot a score of 657 to finish just a couple of points clear of their nearest rival.
