Here's a few things you might not know about August’s birthstone…

💚 Peridot is seriously old.
Some are found in meteorites formed around 4.5 billion years ago, during the earliest history of our solar system.

💎 There’s a 319-carat peridot.
The largest known cut peridot weighs an impressive 319 carats and is held by the Smithsonian Institution. It came from Zabargad, the historic Red Sea source.

👑 It’s been mistaken for emerald.
Some gemstones in Cologne Cathedral that were once believed to be emeralds are actually peridot. There’s even speculation that some of Cleopatra’s famous “emeralds” may have been peridot.

🚀 Some peridot has come from space.
The mineral that makes up peridot, olivine, occurs in certain meteorites — and olivine crystals have even been found in material from a comet.

🌋 It has its own mythology, too.
In Hawaiian tradition, peridot is associated with the tears of Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and fire.
