I have worked on a huge number of watches over the years, nearly all of the brands, makes and models you will see in Northern Australia. 🧐
I started out as a trade-based watchmaker working for 27 individual stores all over NQ, with over 25,000 individual documented jobs per year. In my opinion, the biggest and most common cause of failure in all was moisture ingress, either caused by seals that were past manufacturers' life recommendations or poor battery fitting procedures. 😡
If you have any fogging under your glass, especially after a recent battery fitting, it is not good. Always take it back to the retailer to get it checked. In my opinion, a watch used as everyday wear (normal washing hands, swimming, etc.) needs replacement of all seals around every 5 to 6 years. A watch under heavy use (grease, oils, etc.) should be looked at at least every 3 years.
On any battery fitting done by me, even on only basic water-resistant watches, I will always do a power consumption test on the movement, always take out the crown, check the pendant pipe and the condition of the seals, clean the seal surface areas, and replace the case back seal. This is the minimum needed to maintain a watch.👍
Automatic, mechanical, kinetic, and eco-drive watches should be checked every 5 years minimum.
Moisture will damage your watch! 🤔
