💚 Wise words from one of our favourite stallholders, Damian from Mighty Booch! ✊
"Everyone’s talking about Black Friday, but I want to shine a light on something different this year.
Big companies can afford to take 50%, 60%, even 70% off — not because they’re generous, but because they’ve built those margins in all year. It’s a well-oiled machine designed to make a big splash, pull everyone in, and sweep up a tidal wave of sales.
But for small, local, family-run businesses, it’s a completely different story.
We don’t have the luxury of hiding huge discounts in our pricing.
We don’t have warehouses full of overstock or entire teams modelling profit curves.
We don’t have the funding to burn cash just to “win” a shopping weekend.
When massive sales roll out, small businesses get hit twice:
— once because we can’t slash our prices, and
— again because so much spending disappears into big retailers instead of staying in our own communities.
So this Block Friday, instead of chasing the biggest bargain, I’m asking you — gently, genuinely — to consider something else:
Paying full price for something made locally.
Something made by hand.
Something made by a family, not a corporation.
When you buy from a small WA maker, grower, brewer, artist, or producer, you’re not padding a CEO’s bonus.
You’re helping a kid get sports shoes.
You’re helping a family pay their mortgage.
You’re helping a dream stay alive in a town you actually live in.
Your money stays here.
Your support matters here.
And it means more than you probably realise.
Here’s to Block Friday —
a day for connection instead of consumption,
community instead of chaos, and choosing the people who make this place feel like home. "
