After 30 years at the bench in the high end jewellery manufacturing world, it's really time I did share what I do with everyone because, lets face it, it's a pretty cool job! I've made thousands of beautiful, different and amazing jewellery pieces for so many people here, as well as national and international clients ranging from simple silver jewellery to ridiculously expensive and exclusive gall

ery work from pink diamonds to carved opals. I don't hold stock, I make completely to order. Everybody I've made pieces for becomes a private client, they in turn have their personal jeweller they can call on for any advice or care for their jewellery. Let's face it - it's way more fun to drop that your personal jeweller only works with private clients when your girlfriends drool over your new engagement ring (that they secretly want to copy but they can't because yours was designed specifically for you and I don't do do-overs!)

With every client I've had we've sat down and designed what they want together over coffee and I've made so many amazing things over the years (that have all gone to good homes) that I've decided to share a bit of that with you all. Design is my first love and that's why I've always been happy to work to any budget as long as the end result is beautiful (or awesome, or both) - money doesn't get in the way of that ever. If you like what you see, or the pictures have sparked something that you might want to do with old jewellery lying about, inbox me and we'll design something awesome that you can wear every day rather than sitting in a draw collecting dust. It costs less than what you think it will and you get a lifetime guarantee on the workmanship.

My latest exhibition piece on display
‘Harlequin Boutonnière’
Coober Pedy carved opal flower, sterling silver & yellow gold. The highly polished silver plate was placed behind the opal so, when the brooch is worn, the wearer can see the full flower reflected back at them.
I adore optical illusions... This one is particularly satisfying as the reds and yellows flash across the opal, whilst the blues and greens are reflected back in the mirror.

Ashton, carved quartz, gold & silver

Ok… I had intentions, but I also have little to no consistency at best, so you now get all the other angles at once.

There are details, many, many of them because I live wholly in a micro world and it makes me happy on the inside. Refer to previous posts for context if you’re wondering.

PS: I adore bridges

Ashton…

So whilst I did not get apprenticed to a become a stonemason, I sought out a trade that had some of the same principles. I reluctantly set aside my masonry tools and picked up a hand graver to carve the Roman lettering I watched my dad do with a few strikes of the hammer and chisel and I now echo that in my carving.

It takes infinitely longer to do, but it has come around full circle.

Ashton, the Quartz, gold & silver ring backstory

… I used to walk around as a kid with dad’s smallest masonry hammer and my own chisel dad had gifted me… well, I probably just helped myself and he didn’t have the heart to take them off me. Big softie!

I would carve anything I could get my hands on from his offcuts pile of limestone, sandstone and marble. When it got dark, I’d switch out to pieces of soap and a kitchen knife. No new piece of soap was safe in our house!

I begged for a pocket knife on one of our family trips and they finally gave in to keep me quiet in the car. I could then carve pieces of wood I collected on the way and had my own stash of soapstone rough I bought at a gem fair.

Hand-carved quartz, yellow & rose gold, silver ring.

White Rock crystal quartz - Adelaide Hills
Purchased from a .inc fair when I was a kid.

This is a piece designed and carved to pay tribute to my father, a stonemason, who restored the Ashton bridge between 1992-1994. The same years I was in the middle of my apprenticeship at Martin Rogers in Hazelwood Park, only 15 minutes away from Aston at the top of Greenhill road.

Hang with me for a little beat to hear the rest of the story…

A new / collab remodel for a client. This one was fun to design and make in 18ct yellow gold, white gold and silver using her diamonds and adding a few extra’s to upsize the impressiveness-ness.
