Fantastic to be part of the Eden Hills Primary School Acquaintance Night & Family Picnic. Such a lovely time chatting to the local community and telling them all about what is available at the Blackwood Environment Centre, including information on all sorts of ways to live more sustainably, borrowing from the Library of Things and opportunities to reduce and reuse at The Eco Station

Today Sat 1st Nov 10am-1pm

Can't believe I have been so busy preparing, I think I forgot to post about this.

Blackwood Environment Centre Open Day

Come and find out what we are about and also join in some fantastic activities including:
- meet some native animal
- nature painting with Aunty Ros
- make some reusable Christmas crackers
- learn about what is going on in the community
- see some year 3&4 sea creatures as part of our info display on the SA algal bloom.
And lots more to learn and be part of the community.

Thanks to City of Mitcham and a My Mitcham Community Grant, we now have a recycling station for collection of the community's hard to recycle items.

Fantastic to now have this in the up and coming Environment Centre.

The collections have been managed and distrubuted to the appropriate pathways as a voluntary service by The Eco Station. Now in a more central location, it will be great to have it more easily accessible and utilised by even more people, with the help of a team of volunteers.

This morning I found out we featured in a Glam Adelaide article today along with some other great Adelaide businesses.
Check it out: https://glamadelaide.com.au/swap-cling-wrap-carry-a-keep-cup-choose-loose-produce-this-plastic-free-july/

On the back of that got interviewed on ABC Radio SA Afternoons show, unsurprisingly in the afternoon 😆. Here is the link to our radio interview https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/adelaide-afternoons/afternoons/105473380?utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared- listen in from 16min 5seconds 😁

I had so much I wanted to say so much more but didn't get the chance to. Including talking about buying local (such as Earthyma Products) and the benefits of that, including the ability to refill and reuse packaging. Also the Blackwood Library of Things and the plans for The Environment Centre.
Alas, I had my time and not to be on this occasion. Just means I'll have to try and get on again😆

Adelaide locals are embracing Plastic Free July with simple swaps, local support and sustainable habits that make a real difference.

After building up the anticipation in the last post, yesterday I got caught up in all the practicalities of The Eco Station move.

Drum roll please……we are opening an Environment Centre in Blackwood!!!

The Eco Station is collaborating with The Blackwood Library of Things (BLoT). We are offering our support to extend the hours of BLoT and also create a space for Community Environment Groups to display what they do, how to get involved and helpful, educational information for the community. It will also offer a space for these groups to gather and for workshops to be held, that promote environmental awareness and more sustainable living. With the additional support of Mitcham Council we are super excited to bring this fantastic resource to Blackwood for our community.

The venue is Shop 2, 10 Waite Street, Blackwood, in the section of shops in the block between Tiwu Kumangka Community Centre and Library and the Drakes Shopping Estate. We are next to the local MP office and Blackwood Pets.

The Eco Station will be up and running from tomorrow, Tuesday 24th June with new opening hours that we will be trialing – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday 10am-1pm.

Once we are there, we will be able to really get on with preparing the rest of the space and hope to have the rest of Blackwood Environment Centre up and running very soon. We’ll keep you posted.

Wish me luck getting ready for opening tomorrow and look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Today is the 55th World Earth Day, where we reflect upon, and make a plan to work towards being more sustainable.

Earth Day’s 2025 theme is
OUR POWER, OUR PLANET,
calling for everyone to unite around renewable energy so we can rapidly increase clean electricity by 2030.

This evening the kids and I went down to Brighton after inviting 3 Boothby candidates to sign the pledge to double renewable energy by 2030. We were delighted to have 2 of the 3 sign the pledge.

If you would like to find out more about how you can electrify your home to become more energy resilient and get cheaper bills, as well as reducing your environmental impact, then check out local grassroots groups, Electrify Adelaide https://www.facebook.com/electrifyadelaide/ and MEEH South Australia (my efficient electric house) https://www.facebook.com/groups/meehsa/

Edit: This Monday afternoon we recontacted Nicolle Flint and she will now be attending. This is great news in putting forward the 3 parties candidate views, for people to make a more informed decision.

As many of you know, The Eco Station is so much more than just a shop. Individual change is important but we also need system change.

Local residents (including myself) are putting on this event this coming Saturday 22nd, providing kids activities, so families can participate.

I get it. Politics often suck, but who we elect in the upcoming federal election will have a big impact on our future and that of our kids. It can be impossible to work out what you are really voting for based on fliers in our letterboxes, soundbites, FB posts etc. Each vote really does count, so it is important to know what you are voting for. This is a great opportunity to listen to the candidates side by side (we are still hopeful to hear from the Liberal candidate to have more views represented), so that they are accountable to each other, in what they are saying.

So whether you feel you could benefit from more info or can get a family member or friend to come along, that perhaps doesn't usually engage in politics. Let's not have people deciding on a picture or headlines, or leaving it until the voting line up.

We risk losing a lot which I realise may sound dramatic but we only need to look around the world, and see things we could not have even imagined. We can all do something, even if you think it might be small.

Follow the link to register your seat and so we can cater for kids entertainment. https://events.humanitix.com/boothby-candidates-forum-on-affordable-energy

Many thanks. Adey
