Bi-colour tourmaline is rare because nature has to “switch recipes” mid-growth — the gemstone starts forming with one set of trace elements, then the chemistry suddenly changes and a second colour begins to grow on the same crystal. This precise shift almost never happens cleanly, so only a tiny fraction of tourmalines display two distinct, attractive colours in one stone.
