There are currently some AI videos around which show gemcutting completely wrong, therefore I decided to make a video sequence showing the real process:
First the rough (in our case a trichroic zoisite aka tanzanite) is inspected and all impurities isolated, a preform is manually cut. After having the clean preform a proper design is made, in my case using software, and the stone mounted on a dop stick. At this point the faceting machine comes into play, which allows adjusting the angles and rotational symmetry when cutting the pavilion. After positioning all facets, the gemstone must be polished, for highest quality I use 100.000 grit diamond, corresponding to a surface roughness of below 0.25 microns. Now the gemstone is transferred onto another dop so that we can cut the crown and table, and finally polish this side as well.
The result: a 8.90 ct green zoisite, a gem as rare as a unicorn
