Hi everyone! I’m excited to present and offer for sale a rare and newly discovered (2022) gemstone.
Dragon Garnet is the trade name for an exceptionally rare chromium- and vanadium-bearing Malaya garnet variety. Its most remarkable features are its strong color-change effect and spectacular fluorescence. It is primarily mined in East Africa, especially in Tanzania and Kenya.
General Characteristics
Color:
In daylight, it displays delicate pastel lavender, mauve, or champagne tones. Under incandescent (warm) light, it shifts dramatically to vivid pink or purplish-red.
Fluorescence:
Its most extraordinary property. Under 365 nm UV light, it glows intensely red due to its high chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) content.
Hardness:
7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it durable and well-suited for jewelry.
Refractive Index (RI):
Typically around 1.741 (Malaya garnets range from 1.714 to 1.888). Due to its high RI, it cannot be measured with a standard gemological refractometer.
Crystal System:
Isometric (cubic).
Cleavage:
None.
Fracture:
Conchoidal.
Clarity:
May contain rutile needle inclusions, apatite crystals, and negative crystals.
Chemical Composition
Type:
Chromium- and vanadium-bearing Pyrope–Spessartine mixture.
Coloring agents:
High chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) content with low iron (Fe) — a combination that enables its exceptional fluorescence.
Magnetism:
Can be attracted and moved with a strong magnet.
Size & Rarity
Most faceted stones are small: over 90% of known specimens are under 0.6 carats. Stones above 1 carat are extremely rare and command premium prices.
The gemstone shown in the videos is displayed under different lighting conditions — I aimed to capture and present its full range of colors.
