A common problem with roller blinds is when they “scroll”, that is when the fabric goes hard up against the edge damaging and causing shredding of edge. This can be caused by a variety of factors but predominantly the window head is slightly out of level or the blind is manufactured out of balance. The solution can be to add some thickness to the tube to the end you wish the blind to move to ( in this case the left side) this is best achieved by running the blind fully down and applying tape of some type to the end. This is trial and error, start with a strip of tape, see what happens and add or subtract more or less tape as required. This is more problematic with narrow width blinds, or cheap ones with a very light baserail.

Over the last 10 years I have cut to width and installed at least 15,000 roller blinds that clients have purchased themselves from a variety of suppliers but predominantly Spotlight (80%), Bunnings probably 10% and the balance would be from online retailers as well as others such as Ikea and until recently Freedom. It would be unlikely that any other person in Australia has done more as this has been my professional job over this period. I operate predominantly in the North and North East of Adelaide. Fair to say I have seen it all when it comes to this sort of blind. Over this period there has been an ongoing race to the bottom in terms of quality so I would suggest the following approach when it comes to purchasing roller blinds:

* Online will give you the best result ( DIY Blinds seem to be pretty good , although there are others )

* Do not buy from Ikea

* Buy the best you can afford ( wait till on special) as the gap between top and bottom quality is huge, particularly at Spotlight.
Bunnings are just ok ( the thickness of their fabric is of concern)

*If you buy for new builds off the plan expect that they will need cutting to width ( especially the 150 cm , 90 cm wide windows)

As usual happy to answer your questions

Pleasingly I often get personal messages asking where I am located and services offered so just to clarify. We are located in the North East of Adelaide but do all of our services on site and predominantly cut and install roller blinds which are usually purchased by clients direct from Spotlight as "off the shelf" sizes. We have been doing this professionally for around 10 years and have probably cut over 10,000 blinds. Also install only any other type of internal blinds ( can be sourced from anywhere and predominantly online suppliers

This is why I refuse to install “off the shelf” curtains ( had to on this occasion as I was doing their blinds). Great marketing photo , but note the disclaimer at the bottom of photo. Doesn’t matter what you do they will never look like the photo, look how much light they let thru, they really are garbage!

Those considering ordering floor to ceiling curtains from an online supplier will need to give a very accurate measurement from floor to ceiling should invest in a laser measure unit. These are easy to use, more accurate than a tape measure and economical to buy( mine cost about $90 but you can get ones for half that from Bunnings) I have seen variances of up to 10 mm over the area where the curtains go. You need to advise the smallest measurement as the drop for the supplier. I must have used thousands of times when measuring inside window frames and my most important tool

Don’t see these on special too often at Spotlight but anyone considering spending a bit more for off the shelf roller blinds will not be disappointed with the quality of these. Quiet and very smooth operation, heavy weighted rectangular baserail ( would be even better if black). I would suggest these are the best off the shelf I have ever seen

I don’t normally waste time bagging inferior products but having had to endure the installation of 3 projects in the last week of these roller blinds ( yes they are cheap and were all rentals that the landlord had purchased !) please avoid. They come with an antiquated large 2 piece bracket system and fabric has a ridiculously strong memory which will ensure they never run or look good.

Great example of adding sheers with a bit of fabric weight and texture to economically add warmth to rooms This Angle Vale home needed 6 rooms with a total of around 18 metres window width and 2.7 metre ceilings and managed to get total job including my measure and install for around $4,500. Supplier was DIY Blinds and lead time, packaging and quality continues to impress

When choosing fabrics for curtains or blinds, ensure you look at real samples in your home in artificial lighting as this is the only way to see its true colours. Only deal with online suppliers who will supply free samples for your consideration, and get as many as you can. Do not be pressured by expensive retailers who will visit for appointment and try to get a significant deposit if they are not prepared to leave some samples with you. If you zoom in on the apparent blank photo you will see a handful of different colours and textures which are not obvious when looking at samples on a computer screen

Having just cut and installed these double( day/night) blinds that customer had sourced and paid good money for at Bunnings, I can safely say these are the biggest pile of crap I have ever come across! It would be safe to say that no one in the whole Bunnings organisation has ever installed or tested them. Will not bore you with all their faults so just avoid!!!!
