One kada on each wrist. Both are in 22-karat gold, set with emerald cabochons.

The inner surface of each bangle is smooth, not flat. Our karigars round the edges so the gold does not catch on fabric or press into the wrist bone during a long ceremony. It is a small detail. You only notice it after wearing them for four hours.

The emeralds are cut en cabochon, not faceted. They have a depth that faceted stones do not. In direct sunlight, they look almost black. In indoor light, they open up to a deep, saturated green. That shift is not a flaw. It is why cabochon cuts have been used in Indian jewellery for centuries.

Kundan work sits flat against the skin. There is no gap between the stone and the gold, no setting that lifts or projects. The light hits it differently because of this. It glows rather than sparkles.

At a wedding, in a room full of mirror-work lehengas and crystal chandeliers, that glow reads as quiet. Not quiet as in modest. Quiet as in certain.

We set the stones in 22-karat gold, not 18. The colour difference is visible: warmer, deeper, unmistakably Indian. The weight is noticeable too. Kundan jewellery does not feel like costume. You know it is there.

It was kept in the original velvet box. Twenty-three years. The necklace wrapped in muslin, the earrings in separate pouches, the tikka folded into its own cloth.

When she opened it this morning, the polki caught the light exactly as it does in her mother's wedding photographs. Uncut diamonds do not age. They do not lose brilliance or clarity over time. The gold stays the same colour at twenty years as it was at one.

The lac backing had darkened slightly. That can be restored. But she probably won't bring it in. Her mother never did either. Some wear is its own kind of record.

The polki at the centre of the handpiece is a single uncut diamond, flat on one side and slightly domed on the other. In Jaipur, this cut is called vilandi. It has not been shaped by a machine. It was selected for its natural geometry, then set into gold that was worked around it.

Mehndi fades in ten days. The gold does not.

Gold does not tarnish. That is the simple fact behind every heirloom. The 22-karat gold in a jadau necklace looks the same in fifty years as it does today. The polki, uncut and unfaceted, does not chip or lose its surface. The emeralds will darken slightly, but that deepening is considered a quality, not a flaw.

The flowers from the mandap will be gone by morning. The lehenga will yellow in storage. But this necklace will outlast everything else from the day it was first worn.

That is not sentiment. It is metallurgy.

A Jadau bridal set is not assembled. It is composed. Each emerald is seated into gold that has been softened over an open flame, then pressed by hand until the metal grips the stone on every side. No prongs. No claws. Just gold holding gemstone the way it has for 400 years.

This set took five weeks. Three Karigars worked on it in sequence: one for the gold base, one for the stone-setting, one for the Meenakari enamel on the reverse. The emeralds were matched by eye across seven parcels before the final selection.

When she wears it tomorrow, none of that will be visible. Only the result. That is the nature of the work.

Polki does not reflect light the way a faceted diamond does. It absorbs it. Holds it. Gives it back softer.

This is a Jadau set. 22-karat gold, lac-filled at the back, with uncut polki diamonds set one by one into hand pressed bezels. The emeralds are Colombian, selected for colour depth over size.

The Jadau technique has not changed in four generations. The tools are the same. The sequence is the same. A karigar heats the gold over an open flame, presses the stone into place by hand, and lets the metal cool around it. No prongs. No claws. Just gold gripping gemstone.

That method is the heirloom. The necklace is the proof.
