Penny Cello

Penny Cello As an artist I am always trying to make do with what I have, concentrating on mending and reusing to extend the life of clothes and jewellery.

I like sharing my creative outputs with others and strive to make my art affordable for me and the community. Penny is a local artist who loves recycling and reusing to extend the life of things. She eco dyes quality op shop clothes with rusty objects, tea and gum leaves to give them new life. Penny loves the earthiness of natural dyeing. It’s satisfying to wrap garments, set them to boil in gum l

eaf dye and then sit back with a coffee to watch the pot bubble. Penny also adds bright prints of her designs to dyed clothes, often bush chooks and curlews, which are her favourite birds. She likes to think that her bush chook looks guilty, like the pair that constantly dig up her back garden. Who doesn’t love those quirky chooks? Penny's family also started collecting beach glass years ago to remove it from the sand, but it quickly became one of her favourite objects to work with. The waves and shells do all the smoothing for her! With wire and creativity, beach glass and recycled jewellery become earrings, necklaces and decorations that are uniquely Darwin. Find her clothing at Ginger Pink, and her beach glass creations at the Store at the Museum.

The craft room scene today. I hadn’t planned on sewing but Sable insisted. He and Sierra love just hanging out on or around my sewing table.

Some days it’s just mending the little things.

Do I have sewing kits in multiple places and in multiple bags?
Yes 😄
You never know when you will need to fix a dress or do a quick alteration on a neckline.
