I didn’t have a television in my home until I was 11 years old. When I was a kid, I hated it! But in retrospect I see how the lack of television fed my love of books. I’ve always been a reader.
I love the smell of books, I love the feeling of turning a page. I love all the different typesets and fonts. I love a good book cover. They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but let’s face it, we all do. I keep the books I love and have a nice size home library that grows every month. I will never own a Kindle or an electronic tablet to read on. I love libraries. When I worked in downtown LA, my office was directly across the street from the main library. I spent a good majority of my lunch breaks in that beautiful space.
Which is why when I was recently in Mexico City I knew I had to see Biblioteca Vasconcelos, which combines two of my very favorite subjects, architecture and books. (The only thing that could’ve made it my absolute dream space is if there would’ve been house music in the background 😂.) Nearly 44,000 square feet and 6 floors filled with over 600,000 books on every subject you could possibly imagine. They had a great magazine section, God do I miss magazines!!
After spending about an hour and a half in the library, mostly on the upper floors, I found it interesting that the lighting and the architecture/levels had an odd effect on my body. My knees were trembling a little bit and I felt a bit of vertigo. I’m not somebody who has a problem with heights, so it was interesting to observe how the play with layers, textures and colors messed with my head a little bit.
Oh Mexico City, how all these nuggets of delights on the eyes and senses have won over my soul.
