The Seiko Yacht Timer 8M37-6000 is one of those pieces that reminds you how experimental Seiko was in the late ’80s.
Designed as a regatta timer, this isn’t your typical quartz watch. It runs on the Cal. 8M37 “Dancing Hands” movement, where the hands actively reposition themselves to display countdown functions—giving it an almost analog-digital feel without any LCD screen. You get 5, 10, or 15-minute preset countdowns, a free-set timer up to 30 minutes, and a repeat function, all controlled through pushers and that unique layout.
The watch comes in a 35mm stainless steel case (about 37mm including crown, 41.5mm lug-to-lug, ~11mm thickness) and wears compact but purposeful. The white dial with colorful countdown scale is instantly recognizable, paired with a rotating compass bezel that adds to its tool-watch character. Finished with a Hardlex crystal and 18mm lug width, it keeps things practical and wearable.
What makes this piece stand out is how interactive it feels. When the timer runs, the hands jump and align to track the countdown—something you don’t really see anymore. It’s functional, but also just fun to use.
Produced around the late ’80s to early ’90s, these have become increasingly harder to find, especially in clean, working condition. A proper niche piece from a time when Seiko wasn’t afraid to try something different.
This example is in excellent original condition, showing light amount of scratches and no dents fitting for its age. The dial is clean and crisp, the crystal is clear. The watch comes fitted on custom leather straps with OEM buckle. Watch has been serviced recently and a new battery has been installed. Watch comes with standard watch box (no papers).
