Today’s Candle Fact: Space Zero-G Is a Total Candle Buzzkill
Did you know that if you lit a candle in microgravity, it wouldn't even look like a candle flame? It turns into a creepy, glowing blue blob.
On Earth, gravity does all the heavy lifting. The flame heats up the air, the hot air rises, cool oxygen rushes in at the bottom, and boom—you get that gorgeous, steady teardrop shape and warm golden glow. Gravity is basically the candle's hype man.
Take away gravity (like on the ISS), and convection completely dies:
No rise, just round: Without hot air floating up, oxygen can only crawl toward the flame from every side at the exact same speed. The flame stops reaching upward and just inflates into a soft, weirdly perfect sphere.
No heat, no soot, no glow:
Because oxygen has to slowly diffusion-walk its way to the wick, the candle burns way cooler. It can't even get hot enough to create soot particles to burn off, so the bright yellow completely vanishes—leaving behind a tiny, dim blue ghost flame.
Basically, candles in space look less like cozy magic and more like an alien trying to simulate fire for the first time and failing miserably.
