If you haven’t been to Refillism yet, you’re missing out!
March 10, 2026 - Local entrepreneur Elizabeth Bower spoke about her sustainable retail concept, Refillism, located at 2572 Eastern Blvd, York, PA 17402. Bower began her presentation by sharing the personal and professional journey that led her to open the business. She described how her interest in environmental sustainability and reducing everyday waste gradually evolved into the idea for a refill-based store.
After researching similar concepts in other communities and recognizing a growing interest in sustainable living, Bower decided to bring the idea to York. Refillism operates on a simple concept: reducing single-use plastic and packaging by allowing customers to refill common household and personal care products in reusable containers. Instead of purchasing a new bottle each time, customers bring their own container or purchase a reusable one at the store and refill it with products such as soaps, detergents, shampoos, and cleaning supplies.
Bower explained that the “refill” model helps cut down on plastic waste while also encouraging consumers to buy only the amount they need. The store carefully selects environmentally friendly products that are designed to be refilled repeatedly rather than discarded after a single use.
During her presentation, Bower also discussed the growing movement behind refill-style retailing, which aims to rethink traditional packaging and promote more sustainable consumer habits. She said the concept is becoming increasingly popular in communities that are looking for ways to reduce waste and lessen their environmental impact.
Her presentation provided Rotarians with a glimpse into a growing movement aimed at reducing waste while promoting more environmentally responsible shopping habits in York.
