California landscapes are being asked to do more with less water, greater wildfire awareness, and increasing pressure for plants to establish quickly. This session from the Sunset® Plant Collection and Better Boxwood® expert will explore garden-tested, high-performing plants for Western climates, with a focus on low-water use, fire-resistant characteristics, and varieties that will be successful in your projects. We’ll highlight practical plant choices that give designers the color, texture, structure, and year-round interest their projects demand while responding to the realities of today’s California urban gardens.

Tom Foley is a horticultural industry executive and plant professional with more than 35 years of experience connecting plant innovation with the needs of growers, retailers, landscape professionals, and consumers.

Tom has worked across plant breeding, product development, commercialization, production, and sales, helping bring new and improved plants from concept to successful introduction into the marketplace. His experience provides a unique perspective on what makes a plant successful—not only in production and at retail, but also in the landscapes where plants must ultimately perform.

Tom is passionate about identifying plants that combine exceptional beauty with practical landscape performance, adaptability, and long-term value. He collaborates with plant breeders, growers, retailers, and industry partners to respond to changing consumer preferences, environmental conditions, and regional landscape adaptation.

His work is guided by a simple belief: the best plants are those that successfully connect innovation with landscape performance. Tom shares insights into emerging plant trends, resilient landscapes, and the opportunities created when plant breeding and landscape design work in tandem.

Enjoy our first featured article in our latest Summer issue of the CLD magazine.

In Burbank, designer Laura Morton, APLD, CPLD transformed a neglected 7,800-square-foot lot surrounding a 1935 Spanish Revival home into a joyful, functional garden retreat.

Honoring the property’s mature citrus trees and vintage character, the redesign brings together spaces for barefoot relaxation, outdoor dining, growing food, and drying laundry—while preserving the sense of an abundant, old California garden.

This is a landscape designed not just to look beautiful, but to support everyday living and reconnect its homeowners with the history and spirit of their home.

Our Summer 2026 issue is here! 🌞

Outdoor Living: Connection, Comfort, and the California Lifestyle explores how landscape design expands daily life beyond the home’s walls. From welcoming spaces for gathering and entertaining to restorative gardens for recreation, relaxation, and time in nature, this edition celebrates the many ways Californians embrace outdoor living.

Featuring a diverse range of projects and perspectives, the issue highlights how intentional landscape design creates outdoor environments that are comfortable, functional, and deeply connected to their setting. We explore indoor-outdoor living, destination-inspired gardens, and spaces informed by California’s climate, materials, and planting palettes each offering its own interpretation of what makes a landscape feel purposeful, inviting, and distinctly at home in California.

We are also pleased to welcome advertisers to APLD California Magazine for the first time. Their support, together with the continued generosity of our APLD California sponsors, helps us expand this publication, strengthen our professional community, and advance the practice of landscape design. We are grateful for their partnership and delighted to share this latest issue with you.
