CharlieDog and Friends LLC Adorable stuffed animals based on real-life shelter and rescue pets. Help raise money to get homeless pets home! | www.charliedogandfriends.com |

Our unique, hand-crafted and adorable soft dogs and cats are 17" plush versions of real-life animal shelter adoption success stories. With a high-quality, heirloom feel, they are for sale in our online shop and select retail outlets. We donate five dollars from every 17" toy sold to the home shelter of the pet that inspired it, and $4.00 for every Pocket Pittie we sell to pit bull advocacy groups

and local rescues. In addition to our stuffed toys, we create colorful, patterned, Michael Miller-designed collar bracelets for our human beings. The look just like dog collars, but they're for people! On top of being gorgeous and playful to look at, they're embroidered with a most important message: "Adopt". Wear them and start a conversation. We are happy to donate these collars to rescue organizations looking for a way to raise money for the work they do. Drop us a line if you're a rescue and would like some bracelets.

There comes the day when you realize you will never adopt all the dogs you'd like to.

But some people just keep doing it. B.D. Love, the author of this stirring book of rescue-dog poems, adopted twelve.

They weren't perfect. Sometimes they did bad things. They weren't purebreds, or puppies, they didn't always settle down when they were supposed to. Occasionally, they figured out how to open the fridge.

But he loved them, each and every one, the way that you do. You just do. When it came time to say good-bye, he was just like you, and it hurt. And then he wrote them some poems.

If you know someone who's loved a dog, and had to say good-bye, "Hounds of Wonder: A Life In Rescue Dogs" is a great collection of pictures and poetry and such a perfect present for Christmas, "Gotcha" Day, or as a comfort after that awful loss. The poems aren't sentimental, but boy are they real. You know what I'm talking about.

I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE: Little Mike was at the Manhattan shelter last week, and on that awful list, when Terri spotted him. When I picked him up to drive him to her (she's fostering), the shelter staff carried him out in their arms.

"You know he doesn't walk, right?" they said. I thought that meant he didn't have use of his legs, but it turned out that he was just so completely "shut down", as they say, that he was too scared to stand up.

So they carried him to my car. And we carried him out, once we got home. Then we carried him back to the car for the drive to Terri's house.

He spent the night balled up in a corner of our bathroom, frightened.

But then something really cool happened. In the car, during the transport the next day, he started to slowly, slowly inch forward. He put a paw on the front seat. Then the other paw. Pretty soon he was leaning against us, burying his snout in Dan's shoulder. This dog who shrank from the touch had, in a single day, of his own choice and through his own bravery, decided to take a step in the right direction.

These are the photos of us carrying him. But I'll also post the video from Terri that she sent the day after the transport. You won't believe it!

Rebound Hounds did the rescue here, and Carol, as always, kept an eye out for Mike at the shelter.

I have bad news, and good news. The bad new is that there is only one Maxine, the sweet little elderly seal-dog, surrendered at the Brookly, NY animal pound when her owner was evicted. And that's bad news because if you wanted to adopt Maxine, you're too late. She was adopted today. That's the good news.

THANK YOU for your shares, prayers, comments, likin's and well-wishing all around. Thank you James (shelter volunteer), for bringing her to everyone's attention, and looking out for this little girl.

UPDATE: ADOPTED! (SEE LATER POST ON OUR TIMELINE)

MAXINE (BROOKLYN SHELTER), little seal-dog, is still there. Can you give her a like, a share, a comment? Those little acts save lives, and help Maxine be seen in the newsfeed:

I got this email from a volunteer and I'm hoping he doesn't mind that I'm quoting him. I guess I could have asked....but I didn't. I posted.

"She's still there, and still as sweet natured as ever. I really want her to find a home that will appreciate her. Did you see what Michael posted on her main thread? What he wrote about her demeanor was spot on:

"FYI, Maxine is sitting next to me on the bench in the run as I'm typing this, she is so patient, quiet & respectful that I almost forgot that she's sitting next to me..I'm thinking out of the box on this one, I truly feel that she would make an excellent companion for am elderly person, in all my years volunteering I HAVE NEVER RECOMMEND A PIT FOR THIS...She just loves being around a person and the only thing she wants is to be acknowledged and a pat on her head...She has a soft/old soul..."

I don't see her as a charity case at all. She would be a wonderful 'old soul' addition to a household that doesn't want all the puppy energy and craziness but just a gracious, sweet old lady who will fill your heart with joy when she looks into your eyes."

Maxine, you guys. Please consider her. We'll post her until she finds her Forever and Ever.

Here's the link, with all you'll need to adopt or foster, or just follow her story.

Did you see little COFFEE (Brooklyn) on the "To Be Destroyed" list the other day? Fortunately, this extremely shy puppy was rescued from that dreaded list, and already: Look!

We had the pleasure of hiking with Coffee yesterday, and driving him to his foster home. I can report that he struck gold with his fosters, and it looks like he will get along great with just about any other dog. Isn't he beautiful? Just a little puppy, and oh so shy and sweet -- but even a puppy has to bounce around a bit!

I can't imagine things working out any other way for this perfect puppy. Nice job, Twenty Paws Rescue and Amber! The line for Coffee forms to the right!

MAXINE (BROOKLYN): We posted Maxine last night, but found this comment by Volunteer Michael -- and the behavior evaluation that follows -- especially touching. If you have a moment to read, to share or comment, please do! It will help spread the word about this sad little senior, and your like or comment just may save her life. (Remember, Maxine is polite and tolerant of other dogs, but a bit nervous and not really into playing. So you wouldn't have to worry about her getting into a beef with another dog you might come across while hiking off-leash for example, but you also don't have to feel bad if you can't get her to the dog park.)

"Volunteer Michael J Hans writes: I had her out in the run earlier..What a beautiful sweet girl that's totally lost and confused. As soon as I sat down on the bench she jumped up and sat next to me and pressed herself up against me and just wanted to be petted and held...After awhile she started to open up and relax with me, and then that special moment came-I got my first kiss..She is very sad and confused and returning her to her kennel was heart wrenching.."

Behavior Test:

Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit stiff; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.
Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating.
Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Maxine is very nervous. She is tolerant when greeted but not interested in interaction beyond initial meeting.

PLAYGROUP:
When off leash with other dogs, Maxine is very nervous. She is tolerant when greeted but not interested in interaction beyond initial meeting.
3/28, 3/29 Update
Maxine continues to be tolerant, respectful and friendly with a wagging tail when greeting other dogs but is not interested in interacting after the first meeting.
3/31,4/1 Update
Maxine continues to not be interested in interacting with other dogs but is tolerant and respectful around them.
4/5 Update
She continues to be tolerant around other dogs but is not interested in engaging with them.

A staff member wrote, "Maxine is a shy older lady who was adopted from AC&C eight years ago, but was brought back last week due to landlord issues. I was smitten the first time I saw her! Maxine is short, a bit chubby, and sweetly approached me with a low wag when I called her over. Maxine takes a few minutes to warm up to new people, and will likely do best in a home where her family will give her the time she needs to become comfortable in her new environment.

Please consider Maxine as your next pet, she is longing for the position again to love you until the end!

To adopt Maxine, please contact the Brooklyn AC&C by emailing [email protected] with animal ID # A0723858.

MAXINE IS SUPER-URGENT (BROOKLYN): CAN YOU HELP WITH A LIKE, COMMENT OR SHARE?

So I got this note from James. James volunteers at the Brooklyn shelter and sometimes there's a dog he really likes and he'll ask me to post. The trouble is, the dogs he likes are never the dogs that win the beauty contest -- at least, not the beauty contest you win for outside beauty. Presenting Maxine:

"I know you've been posting a lot of dogs lately and if you think it's best to give it a brief rest so people don't burn out, I can understand. But.........

I love this little girl. A nine-year old pocket pittie, her owner had to surrender her after eight years due to landlord issues, and poor girl seems so confused at the shelter. BTW she's so small that she's in Room 3, the small dog adoption room, rather than Room 2 where the big girls and boys are. She has a soft lump that they don't seem to be too concerned about but they recommend a full geriatric work-up with placement.

To me this might be the perfect dog at the perfect age. She's gotten all the crazed puppyness out of her system, but should have plenty of good years ahead of her. She is very well-mannered on leash. In playgroup she's polite and tolerant of other dogs, but a bit nervous and not really into playing. So you wouldn't have to worry about her getting into a beef with another dog you might come across while hiking off-leash for example, but you also don't have to feel bad if you can't get her to the dog park."

Now, I have to take that back. What a beautiful dog. I hope someone sees this, and takes an immediate liking to Maxine.

Everything you need to adopt Maxine is contained in her main, super-urgent thread: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=977763332236546

James is generously sponsoring this post, meaning, gorgeous Maxine will be seen in many, many more newsfeeds than if we'd just sent her out into the world without sponsorship.

A LITTLE HAPPINESS: STORMY GOES HOME. I'm a shepherd girl, so when I saw Stormy's picture at the Brooklyn shelter, my heart sank a little -- especially since she's eight (about the age I adopted my old shepherd, Wolf).

But Stormy found kindness with Rising Dove Rescue, who took her from the Brooklyn shelter and, shortly after, they posted this update:

"UPDATE ON STORMY > It did not take very long but the stars aligned in this effort. Today Stormy's adoption is pending completion. She will be in a wonderful home on 100 acre property in NEW YORK!!! with other shepherds and horses and an amazing family. Thank you Karina Rosito for bringing her to her family today. Best of all...this family is personally known and we will be able to see Stormy enjoying her new life."

THE BEST NEWS: Silver was rescued by a New Hope Rescue today! We'll let you know who did the deed once we know.

THANK YOU for sharing, commenting, liking, and spreading the word -- it matters.

By the way: have you ever seen a prettier color combination than Silver's? Whoever chose that pink bunny toy for her was stylin.

SILVER (BROOKLYN SHELTER): BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, HAPPY, FRIENDLY GIRL, TO BE DESTROYED TOMORROW:

I got a note from a volunteer who is doing whatever she can to make sure Silver, her favorite, is spared tomorrow. So I'm appealing to you guys: Can you help? Even a like, a comment, or a share will help Silver's smiling pittie face show up in the newsfeed of others -- and you never know if that will save her life.

Silver was surrendered to the Brooklyn, New York shelter because her owner has lost her home, and Silver therefore has nowhere to go. The owner stressed that Silver is a pleasure to have. The owner is devastated about having to surrender her and her bro Bo(A1031753).

Follow Silver's main thread, here https://www.facebook.com/Urgentdeathrowdogs/posts/994764450536434:0

-- it will tell you all you need to know about this sweet, sweet, rubbery, happy, wiggly, gets-along-with-everybody Silver, and adopting her. She can be reserved by a member of the public online at this page http://www.nycacc.org/PublicAtRisk.htm (and once she's reserved, she'll have to be picked up within 48 hours.)

This post was generously sponsored by Michael C. That sponsorship will help this post go far and wide!
