Older than our planet. The Fukang Pallasite meteorite might be the most breathtaking rock ever discovered.

Found in the Fukang region of China back in 2000, this extraordinary space rock was first noticed by a local hiker who had no idea what he had stumbled upon. For a period of time, he regularly sat on it and ate his lunch there, simply thinking it was an oddly large and heavy stone. It was only after noticing its metallic surface and the strange crystals embedded within it that curiosity kicked in. What he had been casually sitting on turned out to be one of the most significant cosmic finds in recorded history.

The meteorite tips the scales at 1,003 kilograms and is estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old, which means it actually formed before Earth even existed.

Pallasites represent the rarest category of meteorites known to science. What makes the Fukang specimen stand out even among those is the sheer size and clarity of its olivine crystals, some of which are comparable in size to a golf ball. When light passes through them, they produce a glowing golden green color that genuinely looks like something out of another world.

Scientists believe pallasites form at the boundary zone separating the core and mantle of a destroyed asteroid. The slow cooling process that shaped the Fukang crystal structure progressed at just a few degrees per million years, which is why those crystals grew so remarkably large and clear.

Collectors today pay between $30 and $50 per gram for small fragments. A single wedge shaped portion sold through Christie's in February 2021 for $30,000, absolutely demolishing the original estimate of $3,500 to $4,500.
