Hooks & Toggles Jewelry

Hooks & Toggles Jewelry Maker of One-of-a-Kind Gemstone Beaded and Chainmaille Jewelry and Geekery.

As an artist, I have always gravitated toward patterns in nature and in man-made items. These patterns swirl all around us, whether they be in colors, shapes, textures or in sheer numbers. It is in making jewelry that I have chosen to express my own joy in these patterns by using gemstones and metals like silver and bronze to make wonderfully unique pieces. I make one-of-a-kind gemstone beaded jew

elry and chainmaille jewelry in bother sterling silver and bronze rings. I also enjoy incorporating fabric techniques like Kumihimo and metal weaving like Viking Knitting into my works.

This is a set I thought I had lost so many years ago that I only remembered it from bad photographs. (These might not be any better to show its magnificent.) i was cleaning out my mom’s house when I found it in paper Kraft bag.

It is called “The Burning Bush” simply for the Murano Glass focal bead at its center. The bead is a one of a kind or very limited edition piece. It is hand-wrapped in 14k gold-filled wire. The rough nugget shaped beads are Mexican Fire Opal. The small faceted beads are vermeil fine silver beads. The four large oval beads flanking it are Thundereggs I believe. I don’t really remember. My memory is as good as it used to be with the strokes, unfortunately.
I chose to make the smaller beads that came in this set earrings which has been unusual for me. I followed the same swirled pattern with the gold-filled wire and used gold-filled ear wires I believe.

My mom often told me I would find them. She was right.

Slowly, but sure I am making stuff. Not doing too many shows because first: my stamina is not good and second: my transportation (My mom) is not here anymore. I am limited to shows close to me.

This piece will be a part of a set. If I recall, the large circles are what is called Shibuichi which is 1 part silver to 3 parts copper alloy. The chainmaille rings are stainless steel. The posts are sterling silver bars. The necklace piece will be more teardrop in shape, but with the same lovely texture pattern. I will probably use a variation of the box weave called a flat box weave so it will lay more flat on the neck and chest.

I had this setting for a long time. I felt it was too flimsy for the stone I had originally wanted set in it. Last night, I found a pouch of small crystals and this setting. Sorta felt like fate if I believed in that type of stuff. Coincidence, I guess. Anyways, I tried several quartz points - clear, amethyst, and smokey. Non fit. Then, I picked up this light green one. I like the structure crystal and the color. At the time, I could remember what it was called. Now, I think it might be fluorite, but I am not sure. Let’s just call it a green crystal for now. So, I proceeded to wrap it up in the prongs. I still feel it is a little flimsy. It’s around 20AWG silver wire, but it seems to hold the crystal securely. I sized it on a mandrel which read size 8.5. It is for sale so PM me for details.

Ripples Among A Bamboo Forest - I have been working on this piece for years. I made the white bronze clay pendant in a class at Beaded Venus several years ago. It has a rippled appearance because it dried awkwardly, but I like it. The chainmaille kit is one of Joshua Diliberto’s monthly kits. I embellished it a bit.
