Show & Tales

Show & Tales Building deeper connections, community & legacy one story of stuff at a time 🤲 You know that old letter you read over and over that makes you feel good?

Or the ones your parents wrote to one another during the Korean War? What about that picture of your grandparents that inspires you every time you feel like giving up? Or the one of you with that diploma that reminds you how far you’ve come… or that instrument your father gave you when you were 17 which he received from his father when he was young? Food, clothing, paintings, jewelry etc.... Bring

these & any other object that has a story to show and tell. Remember you don't have to show & tell... you can just look & listen. Come for the whole time or just a little while. Bring your friends & learn more about their life! Origin story: Show & Tell was conceived of while at a friend’s storytelling event Tell it: Brooklyn in the fall of 2011. Their rules: focus on a theme, 5 minutes, can’t have a “prop” & can’t read from it. But what about all those photos, documents, memorabilia, objects that tell a story? Show & Tell (BK) was “born” at Branded Saloon in the spring of 2012 in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn but by the spring of 2013 they were taking place at 2 other locations in Manhattan. The rest is history…

It’s never really about the things. It’s about the stories attached to them.

This conversation with Bryan Devore is a reminder to start talking now, before family stories disappear forever. From helping seniors navigate major life transitions to supporting families through downsizing, Bryan brings compassion and wisdom to some of life’s hardest conversations.

If you’ve ever wondered what will happen to your belongings—and the memories connected to them, this episode is for you.

What happens when family heirlooms outlive the stories behind them?

In this episode of Things That Matter, Bryan Devore shares the story of two signed baseballs inherited from his grandfather - one signed by Sandy Koufax and the other by Don Drysdale. While the baseballs are treasured keepsakes, the story of how his grandfather got them was never passed down.

Together, we talk about downsizing, senior transitions, and why sharing the stories behind our belongings matters just as much as the objects themselves. Because without the story, even meaningful possessions can eventually become “just stuff.”

What happens when the traditions we love begin to change? 🎟️

Jacob Kendall joins Things That Matter to reflect on Alabama football, family rituals, and the memories tied to a single championship ticket stub. This thoughtful conversation explores aging, nostalgia, and the realization that legacy is often carried through stories and shared experiences—not possessions.

Together, we explore nostalgia, changing traditions, aging, and why the stories behind our keepsakes matter more than the things themselves.

What if your favorite family story could live on forever—woven right into the object itself? 🧵

John Davey’s hooked rug isn’t just décor—it’s a living memory of family vacations, laughter, and a mischievous cat whose story still gets told today. On Things That Matter, we explore how even the most modest objects can carry generations of connection—and how we can preserve those stories for the future.

Some of the most meaningful objects are the ones that make us laugh years later. 🫐

On this episode of Things That Matter, John Davey shares the story behind a handmade rug gifted by his sister—filled with memories of Martha’s Vineyard, childhood summers, and one unforgettable cat named Stripes who couldn’t resist blueberry muffins.

It’s a reminder that the simplest things often hold the richest family stories.

Sometimes the smallest stamp holds the biggest story. 🌍

John McKenzie, aka “John the Traveler,” joins Things That Matter to share how his passports became powerful storytelling tools—capturing curiosity, history in the making, and adventures around the world. This conversation is a reminder that the things we keep often hold the stories that shape our lives.

What object tells the story of your life’s adventures? ✈️
On this episode of Things That Matter, traveler John McKenzie shares the stories behind his five well-worn passports—each one filled with stamps, memories, and moments that shaped who he is today. From a spontaneous college road trip to Canada to a life-changing Peace Corps experience in Uzbekistan, John reminds us that the real value isn’t the passport itself—it’s the stories those stamps hold.

What story would you tell to keep someone’s memory alive? 📖

In this heartfelt episode of Things That Matter, Rev Yolanda shares the story behind Glen’s Adventures, a children’s book honoring her late husband and their shared love of storytelling. Together we talk about grief, creativity, LGBTQIA+ history, and why the stories behind the things we keep are what truly shape our legacy.

Some objects hold an entire love story. 💜

On this episode of Things That Matter, Rev Yolanda shares a very special “show and tell”: a custom children’s book called Glen’s Adventures, created to honor her late husband Glen. Through storytelling, sci-fi imagination, and deep love, the book became a way to keep his spirit present while continuing life’s journey.

It’s a beautiful reminder that grief isn’t only about loss—it’s also about how relationships continue in new ways.
