"Mothers must protect the lives they have helped to bring into the world." --Haida Gwaii, Traditional Circle of Elders Every child is subject to the seeds each adult plants in his/her mind. If we plant praise and "you can do it", the child will grow up with certain predictable behavior patterns. If we plant ideas that there's something wrong with you or you're good for nothing, the child will grow up with predictable behavior patterns. We need to honor and respect the mothers who protect the children and plant positive seeds for their growth. Great Spirit, bless each mother and give her courage and faith.

Don't condemn yourself. Who of us have not made mistakes? No one is perfect, but we are too quick to call ourselves stupid. We have condemned ourselves for eating - even though that is what we have to do. It's just that we eat because it is convenient, we see it, we eat it. If we can get it without having to cook it - all the better. And all the worse - because it doesn't have in it the nutrients we need and it is gone too quickly and we are not satisfied. Laziness has overtaken our good sense. We let ourselves fall into making it easy on ourselves - and in turn we open the door to making it hard. It is a matter of choices, but not solved by self-criticism. ~ The ground says, "The Great Spirit has placed me here to produce all the grows on me, trees and fruit. ~

"Touch not the poisonous firewater that makes wise men turn to fools and robs the spirit of its vision." --Tecumseh, SHAWNEE -- It's not an accident that firewater is also called spirits. Firewater affects our judgments. The Great Spirit created a set of laws and principles by which we are to live our lives. When we have problems we should pray and ask for the wisdom of these laws. If instead we turn to liquor, our judgment will be affected. It is the decision and choice made under the influence of booze that causes us to be fools. We need to learn to lean on prayer and not on the spirits of alcohol. Great Spirit, teach me to pray. Let not one drop of liquor touch my lips today.

A long this time in autumn, we could have a few days of Indian summer. It is a tranquil time of warm sunlight with a bit of haze and soft breezes from the south. This is a token of childhood when bunches of sweet onions were hung on the garden fence to dry and pumpkins and squashes were in colorful piles. We would love this time to last longer - even anticipate that it will. But it is not likely that anything stands still at this time of year. It is too serene, too satisfying not to pass quickly. Maybe it teaches us the give and take of daily life - whether it is the weather or learning to be flexible where people are concerned. There are the pleasant days that we enjoy so much - and then there are those stormy days where we have to hunker down and ride it out. ~ A furious tempest continually sweeps the crown of the mountain....the adventurer.... Years ago, a very wealthy man was asked about the condition of his soul. He responded as he always had - with the idea that money can buy anything. A large sum of money was offered if anyone could give him tangible proof that he even had a soul. His business acumen was not in keeping with the spiritual, so he did not know his soul was a combination of mind, will, and emotions - the very things he used to accumulate his wealth! Many real things are not tangible - fragrance, the wind, sounds; but we feel their influence and know them to be actual and sometimes more enjoyable than they which is touchable. To hear the wind chimes, to smell the bed of petunias and honeysuckle, to feel the breezes - these lovely things prove that we do have souls. ~ My friends, your people have both intellect and heart; you use these to consider in what way you can do the best to live. ~
