I’ve been hearing rumors that one of our favorite monk seals recently died of a suspected boat strike. I’ll skip over the part about rage over carelessness and fury about the senseless killing of marine life. Suffice to say I’m devastated by this news. If the seal was indeed Ka’ale, I’ve been photographing him since he was just a juvenile. He’s featured in holiday cards I’ve made, photographs I’ve sold, and stars in one of my very favorite series of photos where he was bullying a little honu. (Honu eventually swam away safely, ka’ale was having a bit of fun at its expense)
we’ve basically watched him grow up. So wanted to share a few photos in his memory, the beautiful curious monk seal who let me photograph him over the last few years. He deserved so much better and we will miss him tremendously 💙💔
