We set out to build a wrist watch that would synchronize the natural rhythms of the sun and the moon with modern time, show the times for sunrise and sunset, moonrise, moonset and lunar phase along with exact digital, military and analog time.

This note from Victor certainly made me feel good, reminding me of the purpose laden adventure we are on. He is a neurosurgeon out of Scottsdale. Years ago he invested in our YES watch company. I greatly appreciate his support. 🙏

Bjørn,

In these wild winds of our age where empires shift like thunderheads over the fjords and headlines test the mettle of every soul, I see you standing firm at the helm. That is precisely why I wanted to remind you, old friend, that you are no mere captain; you are the modern leader forging destiny from steel, circuits and an unyielding will.

The Copernicus prototypes will rise like dawn over the horizon. The Copernicus will not merely tell time; it will mark the saga of what you’ve built when we refused to yield. My girls helped you select the name for this project.  I’m in a happy mood as tonight, my younger daughter graduated as the valedictorian of her class. My other daughter is in medical school, mastering the art and science of neurosurgery.

Others would have long been crushed by the challenges, but you my friend, you carry the spirit of our ancestors, the ones who crossed impossible seas not because it was easy, but because their blood demanded it. Recently, I learned that Rurik, the Varangian ruler, my ancestor on my father’s side, was a Viking and united the Slavic clans to form Rurik’s land, later Rus-land, later Russia.

Somehow, he makes me think of you, standing in the face of the impossible and laughing at it. Every challenge you face, funding gaps, timelines, tech parameters and the endless grind is but another dragon for you to slay. And you are slaying it. The HK team’s progress, the GPS singing true, Christmas deliveries on the horizon… this is the stuff of legends, man. I hope that you can understand how much respect I have for you.  My busy life prevents me from properly penning you a solid letter, such as this, but tonight it felt appropriate.

The Copernicus will reach wrists, and when it does, the world will know that a band of brothers stood together and made the impossible real. I stand with you. I believe in this project, in you, and in what we are building together.

Onward, always,
Victor

MARKING SOLSTICES & EQUINOXES

On the 8 main turning days of the sun, on solstices, equinox and cross quarter days, the Copernicus marks the day with a gradually evolving checkered pattern in the outer dial and tells you to the minute when it happens.
Esoteric? Perhaps.
Fundamental? You betcha.

Scratch the surface of horological evolution and you’ll find that the solar and lunar time cycles forms the foundation of all calendars and time keeping systems, it lies at the foot of the 24-hour day and night, it propels life on the planet.

The Copernicus collection employs a high definition AMOLED screen to display the daily, monthly and seasonal nuances of solar and lunar time.

By collecting a GPS signal and applying astronomical algorithms, UTC time, Time Zone and DST system it gives you to the minute times for sunrise, sunset, zenith, nadir and twilight as well as moonrise, moonset, lunar high noon and moon phase.

Copernicus reconnects man-made and natural time and offers unique time management and horological insights.

Possibly the coolest part of this time piece? Push one button once and it automatically sets itself for exactly where you are. 🍻

The Copernicus Prototypes Are Coming Together. Yay.
Our Hong Kong team has promised delivery of 4 fully operational prototypes by June 20. Summer Solstice. That is both poetic and exciting. I’ll be visiting Hong Kong for a few intense days of hands on testing with our programmer. Preliminary testing of the jig as pictured tells us all systems are a go. Fantastic.

Cross Quarter Day, May Day or Beltane as the Celtics called it. When summer begins in the northern hemisphere.

A very subtle shift halfway between solstices and equinoxes, four days out of the year.

From the get go I knew our watch collections needed to keep time and date for solstices and equinoxes, but cross quarters? John Schaeffer, a California pioneer in renewable energy who I worked with for years, suggested adding the cross quarters. Easy, why not?
The turning of the sun, a passage through the seasons, complete the circle.

The YES WorldWatch V7 applies astronomical algorithms to calculate solar and lunar time worldwide based on latitude, longitude, time zone, UTC time and DST system. On the 8 main turning days of solar time it displays a checkered pattern in the outer dial.

The instrument of time to plan your activities with confidence. Know natural time, know man made time, know when.

Latest design update from our Hong Kong team.

I love it. Coming in at 43x15mm with GPS reception and a one button push setting sequence. Brilliant. You can be drunk out of your mind and still set Copernicus.

The GPS will give you to the minute times for solar and lunar time for exactly where you are, including over open ocean.

The crevices in the sun pattern will be filled with LUME.

Once our guys are back from Chinese New Year they will get to work on the prototypes. Gunning to have them done by May 1st. That is exciting.

Rocket Science?
Sure feels like it.

Like with every single one of our unique time piece developments, the Copernicus has brought it’s own set of challenges. If there is one thing this business keeps teaching, it is patience. Endless amounts of it.

The good news is that we have finally gotten the PCB for the Copernicus developed and produced. Horology devotees like me see sheer beauty in these kind of images, I hope you do too. Top and bottom layer of the sophisticated YES V8 PCB, ready for assembly into prototypes and mass production. Very cool.

To these circuit boards about 98 different tiny components will be soldered on to enable the different watch functions to run smoothly. A level of complications and insights into time rarely seen in a wristwatch.

The next step is to get the prototypes done. Our HK team tells me that as soon as they are back from CNY, they will dig into it. Pretty sure they will come to fruition on their own time frame, but we are making progress and for that, I suggest a toast to all of us for making it happen, and to your patience.

The Astronomer’s Watch

Astronomers gave us our first love way back at the beginning, a quarter century ago. Just the other day we got some more from Alan, an avid astronomer who got his first YES watch a couple of weeks ago.
Check out this link for his initial thoughts on Cloudy Nights.

I remember Buck, our pioneer investor, asking me when we reviewed the business plan who I thought our customer might be? I answered everybody. He just smiled and shot back, well, let’s do it, let’s see what happens. That just about sums up the overwhelming optimism upon which the YES watch company is based, a time piece created by thinking outside the box.

In 2001 Astronomy magazine ran a half page review and within a fortnight we sold dozens of watches. Wow. How cool was that, we had discovered the first of everybody. It was those who had an immediate practical application for the solunar time data offered and astronomers spotted it right away.

By comparing solar night and lunar night the YES watch will at a glance tell you when the night time sky is at its darkest and hence the best time to view the universe.

By employing astronomical algorithms and based on latitude, longitude, time zone, DST system and UTC time it calculates to the minute times for solar and lunar time: sunrise, sunset, zenith, twilight, nadir, moonrise, moonset, lunar high noon as well as solstices, equinoxes, cross quarter days plus time and date for the next new and full moon.

WINTER SOLSTICE
A Quintessential Marker of Time

On solstices, equinoxes and cross quarter days the V7 displays a checkered pattern in the outer dial and at the push of a button displays the exact time of the event.

Scratch the origin and history of time keeping and you will find that the natural cycles of the sun and the moon are the foundation for all of it. Every calendar mankind ever created attached itself to these cycles in one way or another. The 24 hour count hitched itself to solar high noon, 12 o’clock.

To capture these nuanced cycles one must engage astronomical algorithms and there is one time piece on the planet that took it to the next level of insight, our YES WorldWatch collection.

Based on latitude, longitude, TZ, UTC time and DST it calculates to the minute times for these time cycles and displays them in an intuitive 24-hour display. A holistic understanding of time that offers insights into horology and personal time management not found in any other wristwatch.
