What does caring accomplish when you can’t save the thing you care about?

I’ve been thinking a lot since hearing about the Vanderbilt-Shepard House in New York City and the possibility that this Gilded Age holdout could be torn down.

It’s been weighing on me.

I didn’t even know this house existed until I saw it in the news, but somehow, now that I know about it, I care deeply about what happens to it.

And I’ve been wondering why - and what we’re supposed to do with that feeling when we can’t actually save something.

I wrote about it on my blog. It’s a little more personal than what I usually share, but it felt worth saying.
