Cruel timing, the opening day of the Pleasant Grove Skatepark… I ruptured my ACL. ❤️🩹🛹
On March 22, I took a spill at the skatepark. My knee buckled backwards and I had to forcibly pop it back into joint. I’ve been hobbling around since.
My knee has been bugging me for a couple years. 23 years of skateboarding and that fall was the last straw that finally took me out (for now).
After an MRI and consultation I finally had my procedure yesterday, May 30th. My ACL (ligament running through the knee joint for stability) was completely torn. My Dr. used a ligament from my patellar tendon (front of knee) as my new ACL, wild! My Meniscus (cup between the knee bones) had a tear as well. He repaired that by sewing some and cutting some off. Gonna be a long slow recovery.
I’ve been a home owner in PG for almost 8 years. I’ve spent countless hours either skating by myself in church parking lots or traveling to skateparks in other cities. I gave my testimony at a PG city council meeting on why the skatepark would be a good asset and investment for our community. I went to the ground breaking and have patiently awaited the progress and opening of the park. I’ve been stoked to have a park about a 2m drive from my house. Unfortunately now, I’ll be off my board for up to a year. 😩
I’m doing ok. Feels like lots of pressure on my knee and my foot is tingly. I’m allowed to put weight on my leg and walk with crutches, but I have to wear a knee brace that keeps it completely straight. I start Physical Therapy on Monday.
Luckily, I’ve had time to prepare. My insurance will work with me on the expenses. My work is flexible and accommodating. I’m setup on a recliner with my brace and ice packs. My wife really shines as a care taker, and she’s done a great job.
Injuries suck!!
This is an inflection point for me. I won’t be skating for a while, and I’ll be going through recovery. The last couple years have been especially hard for my family, and the next bit will be a struggle, but I’d like to continue to push my little brand. I’d love to use this down time to do what I can to stay connected and help pushing the skate community.
