1917. Europe was at war. Louis Cartier was watching tanks roll across the Western Front.

He saw not just machinery, but geometry. The angular silhouette of the Renault FT tank inspired him to design a watch that broke completely from the round cases dominating the era.

He called it the Tank.

Flat, rectangular, with parallel side bars evoking the tank's caterpillar tracks and a crown designed to echo a military revolver. The Tank debuted in 1919 as a gift to General John Pershing.

In 1926, Hans Wilsdorf achieved what others considered impossible: a watch case that was completely waterproof.

He called it the Oyster.

To prove it worked, he enlisted British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze to cross the English Channel with one on her wrist. She wore it for over 10 hours in cold open water. The Oyster kept perfect time.

Rolex ran the story in the Daily Mail the next day. It was one of the earliest examples of sponsored athletic endorsement in history.

The Oyster case didn't just protect a movement. It changed how the world thought about watches.

Today the Oyster architecture is found on virtually every Rolex sports model, from the Submariner to the Explorer to the Daytona. A foundation built in 1926, still setting the standard a century later.
