Nancy Fe Designs

Nancy Fe Designs NancyFe Designs creates beautiful custom hand forged jewelry from unusual mediums. The creative outle I do not cast any of the metal elements on my site.

I work primarily with forged iron and semiprecious and precious stones, but also enjoy forging copper, bronze and silver as well. Everything is wrought on an anvil. The concept for the name of my website and business, Nancy Fe Designs, sparked from the chemical element iron with the periodic symbol Fe, as iron is the primary focus of my work. I like to think that each metal element that I create i

s a small sculpture that is exhibited by the wearer. Each is a work of functional art that is enhanced by the wearer as an ornament. Overall I take great pleasure working with iron as a woman and an artist. Iron is a medium that allows me to break a few boundaries and gives me a great sense of accomplishment when I use it in jewelry, as it is not a common material worked with by women or in jewelry. Normally it is viewed as an industrial material which is very masculine in nature. I enjoy pushing the envelope and using it in a way that is beautiful and feminine.

Nancy Fe Designs/Nancy C. Perilloux. Hand forged steel oak tree mounted on Louisiana sinker cypress: This piece was commissioned by The City of Hammond, Louisiana to be presented to their sister city, Joaurs-Ponchartrain, France as a gift. It was an honor to to have the opportunity to create this for this special occasion.

They did not have any specific specifications of what they wanted me to make other than it fit in a suitcase. The oak tree is a beautiful symbol for the city as they are abundant in Hammond with many very old specimens. The city’s logo also bears an oak, and I knew pretty quickly what i wanted to try. The result was this steel oak tree mounted on sinker cypress. This was the first time i have done this type of work on this scale. It is about 14” wide x 12” tall.

All of the texture marks in the steel were created by hand forging each section with a variety of hammers and hot punches/chisels. I heated each section with a torch until red hot and hand forged or chiseled the details on an anvil. It was a laborious task but I loved the challenge and I love the outcome. What i really love about it is that it combines my love of landscape painting with my love of blacksmithing. I have been wanting to marry these two for a while now.

I can’t wait to pursue the myriad of ideas that came to me during the whole creative process from conception to completion.

It makes me happy to know this piece is headed to France tomorrow. I hope I can see it there one day.

I was recently asked by the City of Hammond, LA to create a work of art that their city representatives could present to the officials of Hammond’s sister city, Jouars-Ponchartrain, France which is outside of Paris. It was such an honor and inspiring project.

The oak tree is a beautiful symbol for the city as they are abundant in Hammond with many very old specimens. The city’s logo also bears an oak, and I knew pretty quickly what i wanted to try. I have a selection of work for purchase at the Hammond Regional Arts Center during their Fine and Functional gallery exhibition. These items and much more are available for purchase through December 18th. It would be great to support our local non-profit art center. Buying your Christmas gifts locally and handmade supports so many small businesses and families. We appreciate every ounce of support and are incredibly grateful to be able to create for a living. I really enjoyed creating these from scratch recently. I just listed them on my Etsy store and they are available for purchase. I started off trying to recycle a broken picture frame glass and ended up with these three pressed botanical frames. I dusted off my stained glass equipment and used it to create the framework around the glass. The pressed botanicals are from my morning walks and travels. Queen Anne’s lace is my absolute favorite flower and is abundant on the roadside in Arkansas in the summer. Yes, I pull over 10 times on my way to hot springs just so I can cut flower stems. I keep scissors in my car. It drives my kids crazy but they are so hard to grow. The germs and black eyed Susan are from my woods at home. I decided they needed embellishments so I created hand clothed flowers, stems and leaves to create the copper branches and flowers that are attached. They took a while each to make but were a labor of love and great creative therapy.
