Nancy Fe Designs/Nancy C. Perilloux. Hand forged steel oak tree mounted on Louisiana sinker cypress: This piece was commissioned by The City of Hammond, Louisiana to be presented to their sister city, Joaurs-Ponchartrain, France as a gift. It was an honor to to have the opportunity to create this for this special occasion.
They did not have any specific specifications of what they wanted me to make other than it fit in a suitcase. The oak tree is a beautiful symbol for the city as they are abundant in Hammond with many very old specimens. The city’s logo also bears an oak, and I knew pretty quickly what i wanted to try. The result was this steel oak tree mounted on sinker cypress. This was the first time i have done this type of work on this scale. It is about 14” wide x 12” tall.
All of the texture marks in the steel were created by hand forging each section with a variety of hammers and hot punches/chisels. I heated each section with a torch until red hot and hand forged or chiseled the details on an anvil. It was a laborious task but I loved the challenge and I love the outcome. What i really love about it is that it combines my love of landscape painting with my love of blacksmithing. I have been wanting to marry these two for a while now.
I can’t wait to pursue the myriad of ideas that came to me during the whole creative process from conception to completion.
It makes me happy to know this piece is headed to France tomorrow. I hope I can see it there one day.
