I've been pretty quiet on the facebox lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been working. A lot of exciting things have been going on. Most notably, I have added casting and 3d printing to the shop capabilities. The casting setup is not 100% dialed in yet, a little guerilla garage style. The one trick I've learned over the years working with platinum is that there are NO shortcuts. Period. You skip a step because it will work in gold or silver and you'll end up over finishing/polishing a piece until there's nearly nothing left. Case in point, this beautiful vintage platinum wedding ring. Came to me with a shank so thin that it actually cracked at the sizing joint. Solution? A complete half shank replacement, plus a little Mada magic to help cut down on the ring spinning around on those days where the ring is just a little too big. Hopefully the client likes it, I know I'm pretty happy with the results! 😜

Another project wrapped up and delivered. Sometimes it's nice to be able to be your own boss and do what's right for the customer and not have to answer to corporate bean counters.

Less than a month ago I was approached to see if I could reproduce an earring set that had lost one of the earrings. Sure I can do that I thought. After meeting with the client to see the actual earring, I learned that these earrings were worn by EVERY girl in the family when they got married. At that point it didn't matter that the earrings were "costume jewelry" I needed to find a way to make it happen.

Here are the pictures of the process of making this new client happy. Earrings are basically carved from a solid chunk of brass, set with cubic zirconia and cultured freshwater pearls. Cheers!

Sometimes a material is too costly and you need to adopt slightly nontraditional means to deliver the final product. For this ring I was tasked with making a solid 24 karat gold setting for the client's ruby. We simply could not waste ANY material, due to the cost of the material. I had to figure out a way to manually move the material into shape and produce an oval hole in the ring for the setting of the ruby. The result was completed using hammers, punches and good planning. In a jewelry industry that seems to be overrun with CAD designs, 5 axis wax miling machines and 3d printers it was nice to be able to produce a truly hand forged piece of jewelry.
