Who am I and what is Redmond Gems?
I’m Tim Groulx, and I was lucky enough to grow up around rockhound grandparents who instilled in me a love of the art that natures creates within the earth, and respect for the geological processes that take place to make it happen.
They showed me that hard work, perseverance, and patience can lead to thrilling rewards, or at the least good times in the process. I got to follow them around the deserts of Southern California, Grandpa’s shop at their house, and at gem and mineral shows where they showed their wares and worked the booth.
I also witnessed the artistic side of gems and minerals as Grandpa was talented all the way through the process from hunting and mining to lapidary, and silversmithing. Grandma was a great painter and her painted thundereggs were a favorite.
I’ve been a collector, minor rockhound, and amateur lapidary artist all my life as a result. I’ve realized that the obsession only continues to grow, so I’m taking it to the next level with the formation of Redmond Gems.
I gins and buy materials from here in the US, Indonesia, India, Colombia, and Brazil for lapidary work. I’ll sell rough rock, polished display pieces, gems, minerals, and jewelry.
I hope the journey will have many twists and turns. I’ll use this page to give updates on rockhounding adventures, lapidary work, and jewelry making, and specimens we have for sale.
My goal is to show the end to end process, from the hunt through to polished pieces of art.
