This was an interesting deck replacement.
The homeowner reported that a lot of water runs down the hill and gathers right in this area, often leading to flooding in the crawl space under her cabin. Thus, the entire area under the deck was prepared as a drainage field, rock and gravel over a graded fabric-overlain slope leading towards a French drain that opens onto a channel on the side of the house.
All openings greater than 1/4" leading under the deck have also been blocked off with 1/8" machine cloth to prevent critter ingress.
A lot of stuff gets grandfathered in with regards to coffee compliance, given the "Wild West" nature of Groom Creek building practices in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. This was no exception. To get the right height at the bottom of the door, we had to be just a couple of inches above the septic tank lid and clean out. We also didn't want to just bury those, so we made some access hatches. Normally, none of this would be too code, but what else were we going to do without making the homeowner go through 10's of thousands of system upgrades that she couldn't afford?
Unique situations call for some unique solutions, and we're proud to put our names on this one. And the homeowner loves it, so I'd say there were wins all around.

Normally you make this cut before you put up the beam... But when you're coming behind the guys that didn't, you gotta do what you gotta do. There's also just something really satisfying about doing the hammering for something like this, though the overhead-cutting part isn't enviable.

When the Mrs. hates the countertops, but you're renting (not to mention poor), so you can't exactly demo and replace with granite: build a cap. It looks great, and you can simply pop it of when it's time to move: no harm done = get your deposit back.
Cheap wood and leftover stain and polyurethane.

Really makes me wish i had more finish tools, though. Oh well, I'll keep dreaming until the dream becomes reality.

Finally finished my girlfriend's Christmas gift, only about a month late. Pulled some decorative door casing and old gutter pipes off a job I was working and decided I could do something with that. How about a jewelry hanger for my favorite person? Personally, I think her style in jewelry fits it rather well.
Materials: alder wood and copper.
Features: shelves for rings, k***s to hang necklaces, and chains to hook earrings. Chains are also on magnetic clasps that allow them to be detached for ease of access (this is an experimental feature that can be removed if she doesn't like it).

to that one time I helped a friend on an interior design pet project (shout out to ). The original design was a great collaboration. Unfortunately the table did not weather very well... it split a bit when it began drying out. Guess I should have used seasoned wood, huh?
Still, I love the design, . Would love to try it again with the right wood. @ Pasadena, California

This one was a Christmas gift for the old man. Found a ball of quartz while hiking in the Smokey Mountains. I was only going to polish it, but when I saw the grinder passing light through it (still not sure what was causing that, but it was really cool to watch), I decided to go a little beyond simply polishing. A bit of torch burning on the box before staining and lacquering, and here you have it.
Materials: quartz, alder.

Some sons give their parents macaroni picture frames, some get a little more elaborate, haha. I guess I was once one of those picture frame guys, too, so no judgement.
