Join us online on Wednesday, April 8th at noon Pacific for our live demo, Phenology Wheels with Sandy Allnock!

In this demo, learn how to create your own phenology wheel—one of the most beautiful forms of nature journaling. A phenology wheel is a circular piece of art with small paintings created each day after your morning walk. Phenology, which is the study of the changes in nature over time, helps you engage with the natural world around you, and a tiny daily painting can transform your relationship with both the outdoors and with art.

Bring a couple of your favorite round brushes, some loose sheets of watercolor paper, and paints in your favorite bright and springy hues. Sandy will be sharing a special discount on art classes for live demo participants, so be sure to join us!

For starters, you could assemble 12 Mini Pans in a Demi Palette, 14 Standard Pans in a Pocket Palette, or 15 Double Pans in a Folio Palette for even, proportional pigments. Switch in a bigger pan for a color you love, or swap paint pans for a Small, Large or XL Mixing Pan.

Nature journaling prompt: Dormant tree silhouettes. Today you’ll be taking a closer look at deciduous trees. Practice capturing the unique branching patterns of bare, dormant trees. What directions do the branches take, and what techniques can you experiment with to capture them on paper?

This week’s blog features a guest post from Lisa Work.

”Nature journaling has become, for me, a practice of returning—both to places I love and to a slower way of seeing,” writes Lisa. “In the fall, I love looking up into canopies of yellow, orange, and burgundy. In winter, I find myself enjoying that upward gaze just as much. Even without leaves, the forest is full of movement and quiet energy. Dormancy, I’m learning, is not the absence of life, but life at rest.”

Thank you so much, Lisa, for sharing your art, process, and reflections on nature journaling with us! Read Lisa’s full blog post here: https://arttoolkit.com/blog/2026/01/nature-journaling-prompt-dormant-trees/

Zoom In, Zoom Out: Choose one natural object and sketch it at three different scales: life-size, magnified, and zoomed-out in the environment. This is a great chance to play with perspective: how does the object look from straight on vs. from above?

Today on the blog, Retail Manager Brooke Weber writes about the inspiration and process behind her response to the nature journaling prompt above.

”I found inspiration in the luxurious nasturtiums beneath my sibling’s ornamental plum tree. There’s a story in those nasturtiums and their December tenacity, but since I don’t speak plant, I don’t know it,” writes Brooke. ”I loved the invitation to leave behind my normal frame of reference to focus so close on a droplet of water. I enjoyed the process, especially when I rubbed the cool skin of the nasturtium between my fingers, and felt the wrinkles and the veins before I ever started putting paint to page.”

Read Brooke’s full blog post here: https://arttoolkit.com/blog/2026/01/zoom-in-zoom-out/.

We’re excited to announce a new sketching tool and brush to our website!

The Sailor Fude De Mannen Fountain Pen features a unique 55 degree bent nib, which allows you to create a range of fine and heavy lines. We first learned about these fountain pens from our community of artists. The Fude De Mannen Fountain Pen gives expressive, variable lines and is a favorite of many of our Urban Sketcher friends.

The fountain pen comes with two black water-soluble ink cartridges that are ready to use. We are also stocking Sailor Ink Cartridges and the Sailor Ink Converter, which allows you to refill your Sailor fountain pen with bottled fountain ink, on our website.

The Neptune 1" Mottler is an absorbent, flat brush ideal for even washes and sharp edges. Compact and travel-size, the Neptune 1" Mottler tucks neatly into both the Pocket and A5 Art Toolkits.

We’re thrilled to have a new warehouse space for our operations!

Our new warehouse space gives us breathing room with more areas for inventory, production, and office team work stations (everyone has a desk!). We love having good neighbors, too, from the Aurora Loop Gallery across the street, to nearby Social Fabric Brewing, Lila’s Kitchen, and our favorite, Raney Day Coffee Truck. We also have a lovely nearby duck pond with lots of wild blackberries to pick in late summer.

Warehouse highlights:

- Getting to open the big bay doors on sunny days
- The smooth floor which the Logistics Team loves (they have been outfitting office chairs with rollerblade wheels for extra smooth gliding)
- Plants that make the space more friendly and beautiful

Check out our blog post for the full update and see more photos of our new space! https://arttoolkit.com/blog/2025/12/room-to-grow-expanding-our-workspace
