A very fond farewell ❤️
A bit of a long post, fifteen+ years in the making…
“My store is closing this week. I own a store, did I ever tell you that? It's a lovely store…
Soon, it'll be just a memory…
(and) the truth is... I'm heartbroken.”
-Kathleen Kelly, You’ve Got Mail
(for Patty ❤️)
The true eloquence of the “proper goodbye” is escaping me… and although going “gentle into that good night” (à la D. Thomas) seems fitting for the introverted me, my immeasurable gratitude for so many elements of my journey over the last 15+ years seems too vast to just close the door. But this is, for now, my best attempt to say yes, I’m saying goodbye to this lovely chapter of curating for the sake of creating beautiful jewelry. So if you have had even the smallest part - the quickest glance or passing thought - for my business, thank you.
A dream to create with pieces from the past became a passion - perhaps not a vocation - but a passion, and I’m grateful for every part of the journey. Creating something to share with others is immensely gratifying. Learning how to share it, especially in a pre-internet commerce and communication world, was challenging and eventually, very rewarding. Finding business partners at all stages who embraced not only my work, but also me, was life changing. I’ve discovered friendships that will last forever in the ground breaking fashion designers, visionary stylists and press endorsers, courageous shop owners and their loyal workers - and of course, the wonderful customers who patronize them.
And most important of all, the continued support from my loving family and close friends has been the cornerstone on which my daily strength and drive has been able to build. I also never fail to pay homage to the great craftspeople of centuries past, who created the very pieces that I curate. Their original vision is the tangible heartbeat of each design, and it’s been an honor for me to reintroduce them to their next caretakers. I have learned SO much about these items - the hand crafted techniques, intended uses, provenance, and endless stories of those pieces of history. The pure, transformative magic of holding and reimagining these rare treasures has never been lost on me. A form of my own museum curation - but without the velvet ropes and locked cases.
Sometimes throughout all stages of the journey, creatives struggle with their own definition, their perceived “worth”, their ability to pivot when necessary. But when surrounded by those who believe in them, they can keep being true to that little internal voice that simply says “keep going, keep dreaming, keep creating”. I am so fortunate to have had that reality.
And as for what’s next… I’m keeping things open, but I’m sure there will be plenty of curating and creating and art of all kinds! And of course, more time for coffee with my daughters, travels with the hubby, lunch and champagne toasts with friends, museum field trips, and snuggles with my furry housemates.
Thank you for being a part of my story as I am grateful to be a part of all of yours ❤️
