Mapping out the new watchmaking and micro-machining shops! Saying goodbye to the old setup and designing this new space completely from the ground up.

Measure twice, cut once, right? Here you can see the overarching floor plan I've been working on to make sure everything has its dedicated spot, ensuring the workflow makes sense. I’ve got the CAD mockup for the custom bench designed to handle the micro-machining equipment and give me the perfect working height.

As much as I want to start turning parts and getting back to restoration work, there is still a mountain of work to do in these two rooms.

The current to-do list:
Upgrade the lighting
Paint the walls
Install the new flooring
The monumental task of moving everything into place

It’s a blank slate right now, but I can't wait to see it come to life. The renderings are really getting me excited to see the space transform!

How it started, and how it's ending...

I’ve been a professional watchmaker since 2014, but back in 2018, I carved out a small corner of the basement in our first house. At the time, it was just a modest hobby setup where I bought and sold vintage watches and hand-stitched leather straps on the side.

Slowly but surely, that tiny corner began to take over. It evolved into RM Watch and Clock, expanding into a full precision machine shop and restoration space—and ultimately gave me the runway to leave my bench job of nearly a decade to step out as a full-time independent watchmaker.

Now, we’re packing it all up and moving into a new home! Saying goodbye to the space where it all began is bittersweet, but I couldn’t be more excited to build out a dedicated, purpose-built workshop from the ground up.

Tightening up the seconds hand on this beautiful fancy dial Elgin.

The seconds hand was very loose on the post, easily coming off just with tweezers. A tightening tool with graduated hole sizes is essential for a quick and precise adjustment. Simply measure the diameter of the pipe and place it in the corresponding slot and gently tighten the tool. Be mindful not to go too far, it's much better to do it twice than have to broach the hand! Once the hand is securely installed, it's important to check the clearance between it and the dial, as well as the hour hand, especially with the tight tolerances of a hunting case!

There is nothing quite like the moment an antique movement takes its first breath again. Dropping the balance into this Elgin pocket watch and watching it spring to life is a feeling that never gets old.

An Elgin pocket watch is on the bench that was running sluggishly. Upon removing the case and dial, I found it to be saturated in a mystery oil! Before I start my disassembly process, it will run through a pre-clean cycle. My pre-clean consists of an agitation only run through a cleaning solution, two rinsing solutions, and a drying cycle. Pre-cleaning the movement is a vital step I always take that allows me to more easily inspect the movement for wear during disassembly as well as keeping my bench much cleaner!

Watch as I install a new crystal in this beautiful Waltham hunting case pocket watch!

A huge shout out to Pocket Watch Database for this Crystal Size Calculator utility. When searching for a vintage crystal for a pocket watch, the sizing numbers can seem a bit... Abstract... Their utility allows you to simply plug in the millimeter size of the bezel seat and it pulls up the nearest crystal size to fit! In this instance, my 34mm bezel seat called for a size 15 0/16 crystal. Luckily I had one in my stash of NOS crystals and it was a perfect fit. After a quick clean in the ultrasonic, the new crystal was gently worked into the bezel with a friction fit, being very cautious not to shatter the ultra thin glass. Bezel is then snapped onto the case frame and the watch is good to go!

Tracking down a complete loss of power in this Cartier cal. 191 (GP 3100).

The second wheel had become loose on its arbor, so power from the mainspring slips and fails to reach the escapement, stopping the watch in its tracks.

To fix this, the wheel is carefully secured back onto the axle using a staking tool. After applying a touch of grease to the shaft, the cannon pinion is pressed on and the setting friction is tested to ensure it's not too tight or too loose. Following a full ultrasonic clean and reassembly, power is flowing flawlessly through the gear train once again. Back in working order!

An Elgin pocket watch in a stunning multi color hunting case came across my bench. It had a number of issues that needed resolved, most immediately noticeable being an improperly fit acrylic crystal that wouldn't allow the case lid to close. After a full service of the movement, an ultrasonic bath for the case, and a NOS savonette glass crystal installed to show off the beautiful fancy enamel dial, this watch is ready to be cherished for many more years to come!

The tiniest tune you'll hear today!

A dear friend gifted me this miniature music box mechanism, and after a quick service on the bench, I can't stop playing it. Good things really do come in small packages.

A Hamilton Electric "Centaur" came across my bench. In excellent condition and just needed a new battery, but always a pleasure to have a caliber 505 in the shop. Such a cool and important piece of horological history!
