From a branding viewpoint, itโs easy to use Lilith as a symbol when your woman owned business has โdemonโ in the name. What started as very simple symbolism, grew into my wanting to learn more about the lore of Lilith. Iโm sure thereโs more research to be done on her many depictions throughout history, but Iโve come to realize that her persona is incredibly layered.
Lilith has been depicted as Adamโs first wife, a child-hating succubus, a self absorbed beauty, a symbol of sexual freedom, the list goes on. Most stories view her in a negative light, a handful in a positive one.
My personal opinion? I think sheโs the embodiment of how easy it is to hate something that, at face value, is the idea of perfection in a woman. Halseyโs song โLilithโ starts with the lyrics โWell Iโm perfection when it comes to first impressions,โ but as the song continues she quickly becomes a voice for her own criticisms (and possibly what hurtful rhetoric has been thrown around regarding her).
โI am disgusting, Iโve been corruptedโฆI donโt need no help to be destructive.โ These lyrics perfectly describe how I believe Lilith to be thought of through the majority of stories. Sheโs a vessel for peopleโs projection of their own insecurities. She doesnโt shy away from her beauty or blessings, she loves openly and deeply, and encourages other women to reclaim their freedom. Sheโs placed in darkness within mythology because thatโs where the misunderstood and hated rest.
The Eye of Lilith represents being seen in the darkness, the sun rays depicted behind her shows the light being shed. Itโs an attempt to break the darkness and see yourself and your surroundings in an honest, eye opening light.
