Several years ago, contemporary Brazilian photographer and artist Vik Muniz epigrammatically described why the Lange 1 appealed to him so strongly since its 1994 debut, saying “Since this is one for the rest of my life, I want it to be pretty.”

From the day it was announced on October 24, 1994, the Lange 1 is likely the most recognizable watch in the Glashütte-based A. Lange & Söhne catalog. And for good reason — the prototypical big date display was the first in modern history, and the dial layout was like few others at the time. The collection has grown in scope and reputation since then, with all Lange 1 watches since having used some iteration of the original caliber L901.0 movement, immediately recognizable due to its august three-quarter plate done in German silver. Last month, A. Lange & Söhne updated the collection’s travel watch, the Lange 1 Time Zone, for the third time since its initial 2005 release, and it is set to be the final Lange 1 with an updated version of the L901.0.

10. Akrivia Chronomètre Contemporain Only Watch
This platinum beauty comes straight from the mind of Rexhep Rexhepi, who has seen fit to emblazon the dial with his name (and why not?). Despite that unusual branding choice, this piece comes as part of the Akrivia brand canon, and one of the finest, most wearable examples yet in my opinion. At 38mm wide and 9.5mm thick, this is one sublimely wearable watch. The in-house and expertly finished RR01 caliber boasts an impressive 100-hour power reserve from one barrel. But Rexhepi didn’t achieve this piece entirely by himself: The case was made by Mr. Jean Pierre Hagmann, the famed Genevan artisan, heralding the dawn of a new partnership that could yield some very exciting results. The estimated hammer price for this model is $40,000-60,000.

For four months in the fall of 2007, I studied abroad in Perugia, Italy. I was in the center of the country, and while I never made it to Florence or Pisa or Milan, I did take a weekend to meet some friends in Venice. It was a magical weekend that involved digging a cork out of a wine bottle with a carrot peeler and refusing to pay €60 for a gondola ride. Venice was crowded and touristy, though, and St. Mark’s was almost claustrophobic — I was happy for the condo we had, tucked back among the hidden waterways. The Venice illustrated on the Redentore Bellanotte is foreign to me, but it certainly exists somewhere, at some time — an idyllic depiction of a magical city. The disconnect between my experience and what’s on the dial didn’t hamper my enjoyment: The watch is easy on the wrist and even easier on the eyes, and I won’t deny that a part of the charm for me was a personal nostalgia.
