💎 Before you choose a gemstone ring, you should know this about your gemstone.
Have you ever wondered why some gemstones are better for everyday rings, while others are better for pendants, earrings, or special-occasion jewelry?
It comes down partly to gemstone hardness.
The Mohs Hardness Scale measures how resistant a gemstone is to scratching. The scale runs from 1 to 10:
1 = very soft
10 = hardest
But there’s an important detail 👀
Hardness does NOT mean the same thing as overall durability.
A gemstone can have a relatively high Mohs hardness and still need careful handling because of its natural characteristics, inclusions, toughness, or the way it is set in jewelry.
So what does this mean when choosing jewelry?
💍 For everyday rings:
💎Diamond, ruby, and sapphire 💎are popular choices because they have high hardness and good toughness. They can be excellent options for jewelry that gets worn frequently.
✨ For earrings & pendants:
Gemstones such as emerald, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, and tourmaline can be beautiful choices.
Because these pieces usually experience less impact than rings, they can be easier to wear regularly with appropriate care.
🌙 For special-occasion jewelry:
Opal, turquoise, and pearl are softer and more susceptible to scratching, so they generally benefit from more careful, occasional wear.
And this is why choosing a gemstone isn’t simply about picking the hardest stone.
You should also consider how you wear your jewelry, what type of jewelry you’re making, the setting, and how much care the gemstone needs.
